You're Not Alone

I screamed as I felt myself being tugged into some type of darkness. It felt like it had some type of hunger for human souls, something that wasn't natural.

I stared silently at the world before me. Knowing my friends wouldn't be there to help save me, knowing they had no reason to save me, because in the end...

Maybe I'm just alone.

I braced myself as pure darkness overwhelmed me. Was this how my life would end? Or would I wake up back in the real world, with the hollow memory of this virtual world? I reached my arm out vainly, knowing it probably was my end seeing the last rays of light. Tears went down my face, I'm sorry everyone, I let you down...

"Savannah!!!" I heard someone say and grab my arm. Almost immediately I was pulled out of the darkness, able to see light again. I looked at who had said my name, and I started breaking into tears.

"Gabe!" I cried out. I hugged him tightly, scared that if I didn't hold on I might lose him again into the darkness. He held me just as tightly, like he was as scared as I was,"You're safe now, Savannah. I'll protect you." He told me with my head on his shoulder as he held me close.

We stood there, holding each other tightly for some moments while I was shaking. "Don't let me leave you." I said quietly and Shrew nodded, "I won't." I didn't know what to feel after that moment. Was I happy that Shrew had saved me, or sad that he had to see part of the truth? I blocked the thoughts out of my head. For now I just wanted to stay close in Shrew's arms, where he'd protect me, even if that wasn't the most of the trouble.

"Let's go back now, it's way past noon and everyone should be heading to bed. " Shrew said and I agreed. We pulled apart and I followed just behind Shrew as we came towards our homes. I was glad he didn't ask me anymore about what had just happened that day, because I was scared of what other obstacles my friends and I would face in this world.

As Shrew opened the door to his house, we both tucked ourselves into the bed and tried to sleep. I layed awake on my bed, too many problems filled my mind and I couldn't bring myself to sleep. Without any thought, I moved closer to Shrew, relaxing to his touch and closed my eyes. He seemed to be surprised by me being next to him, but then he seemed to smile. "Goodnight Savannah," he said pulling me into a hug, "I'll always be there for you." I felt myself smile, finally going to sleep.

I might not be alone after all.

I found myself floating around in a starry, dark world. With little flickers of light reminding me that I wasn't back in the real world. I sighed and closed my eyes, savoring the calming silence around myself.

Until someone has to ruin the thought.

"Hello!" Came the cheery voice of the game maker who I absolutely despised. I didn't reply, making the woman's unusually happy face falter into an untrusting smirk. "You realize what you have done haven't you?" She asked simply, slowly getting to the point that I knew wasn't going to me good. I shook my head. There were things that have happened, but I didn't know which ones were "not allowed" by the game maker. Unless...

"You and your friend said your real names. " she said angrily. I was honestly surprised, I didn't know she even had a mad side to herself until now. I even knew we had said our real names, but I didn't think it was bad. In a way at least.

"Have you honestly forgotten what I even said on the first day into this game?" She asked me with a calm madness. "No," I didn't really forget, I just forgot at that moment not to, "but I think you've forgotten that we have our own lives too. And we aren't just your pawns in a chessboard game. " The woman didn't seem to be taken back by my statement, instead smiling.

"Prepare for the worst, Savannah. It'll come to you sooner than you can say, "Sorry." The world faded around me, and I was awakened by Shrew shaking me frantically.

"Leaf! There's a monster attacking again! We have to leave!" Shrew yelled and I immediately woke up. "Oh no..." I said thinking about my meeting with the game maker. "I didn't expect it this soon..." I didn't have much more time to think until Shrew grabbed my hand and we raced outside with all the others who were fighting off the monster. It had fangs just like a sabertooth that dripped with some type of venom, looking just like a leopard. It's eyes flashed a icy blue color as if it was generated specifically for us to fight.

Bracken used his shielding powers to protect everyone near him by a few lengths so they wouldn't get bitten by its fangs, Storm was flying through the air attacking the monster from above, and Sorrel ran in a frenzy of zips and zooms trying to confuse the monster of where she was. Star was a few lengths behind from the battlefield, with glowing bow and arrows ready to fire when he got a clear shot, and Shrew was preparing a trap for the monster so we could escape.

I suddenly realized what everyone could do to help stop the creature for a longer amount of time. "Storm! Create a tornado around the leopard! " I started calling out, Storm looked at me a bit surprised but figured out how to do so. I nodded and looked at Bracken, "Bracken, use the power of everyone else around you to build a stronger shield! We don't want those fangs biting us. " I noticed Fire, who was shooting fire blasts at the monster, "Fire! Create a barrier around it so it won't be able to get out for a while! " I watched as my plan was working, and the mutated leopard was being held back by our forces. Even if it was held back though, our powers haven't had the correct training to be at its strongest use.

Shrew seemed to realize that too, and started to call everyone away. "Let's go!" Judging by the flames around the creature, we would have about fifteen minutes before it would either chase us, or give up on finding where we were. I didn't think it would give up its fight so soon through, knowing it was built by the game maker exactly for us.

We started running our way away from the leopard, and once it was out of sight Sorrel looked at me. "Where should we go? Once it gets out it'll follow us anywhere in the woods. " I had an idea, but it was very risky. I looked towards the steep and rocky terrain in the horizon. Storm followed my gaze, "Leaf, no. We haven't been there before, it could be even more dangerous than the woods!"

I continued having my mind set on the mountains, "This forest was risky too, when we first came here remember? That shouldn't mean there is much worse. Plus, the leopard might not be able to climb very far with the mountain's smooth surface, we might have a chance of survival there. " Everyone looked doubtful at first, but Sorrel stepped in. "I think it's a crazy idea. But we don't have many good choices if we stay here, we might have to continue running away from the leopard all the time if we stay here." Everyone mumbled agreement and Bracken broke the silence,"Then let's go. Leaf, lead the way."

I nodded at Bracken and we started to hurry our way towards the mountains. I didn't want that creature meeting us right when we agreed to go, otherwise there would be not point in choosing in the first place.

I stared at the land ahead of us when we came to the mountains. I tried to hide my feeling of discomfort as we started walking upward on the rocky surface. I was worried about what the game maker had said.

Did we even have time to prepare for the worst?
