You look out the window of the back seat of your foster parents' mini-van, the wind billowing through your h/l h/c locks. You closed your eyes and breathed in the salty ocean air. You've always felt at peace near the ocean, even though you were a city girl at heart. You readjusted your earbuds and smiled as you daydreamed about your new life.
You opened your eyes to view the trees blurring past, tall and green, silent but whispering. You noticed the lighthouse dotting the cliff, a beacon in more ways than one as the waves lapped at the cliffside, the smell of salt and pine invading your nose. You felt drawn to it, like a moth to the flame. It was a beautiful sight, but you were no photographer. Your talent lay in seeing beauty, not capturing it.
"Hey N/N, what do you say we get something to eat? It's been a long drive." Your foster father says, and your foster mother nods in agreement.
"That sounds like a great idea, F/N! What do you think, hon?" Your foster mother asks, turning from the passenger seat to look at you. You smile and nod.
"Sure, I could eat." You shrug, staring out the window at the passing town. Your father pulls into the parking lot of a diner, The Two Whales. It looks charming enough, and you smile to yourself. You all pile out of the car and walk toward the little diner.
The interior is that of a normal, average American diner. There's a jukebox in the corner and a cop sitting at the bar, drinking his coffee and munching on his pie. There are a few college kids sitting scattered among the booths lining the window, and your parents seem to notice this too.
"Why don't you go make some friends, N/N, we'll be right up here at the bar." Your foster father says with a smile gesturing to the booths. You shrug and look closer at the inhabitants of said booths. In one sat a boy with a varsity jacket on, although he looked too wiry for anything other than swimming or running. He was currently mumbling to himself angrily, and you decided it was best not to bug him.
In another booth sat three girls, two that were obviously followers and the leader, an intimidating looking girl with short blond hair swept to the side and an expensive cashmere sweater. She sat speaking in what you assumed to be English, although you barely understood any of the things she was talking about.
You moved on, glancing over the final inhabited booth. A punk-looking girl with bright blue hair semi-covered by a black beanie sat drinking coffee from a mug, a cigarette burning in her hand. The waitress behind the bar glared in annoyance at the girl and her cigarette, and you wondered if they were related.
The girl rolled her eyes and sat her mug down, taking a long drag and exhaling a cloud a smoke seeming just to annoy the waitress, who poured your fathers coffee with venom in her eyes. It was then that the girl noticed you staring, and subtly waved her hand in what you assumed to be a gesture for you to come sit with her.
You slowly and awkwardly shuffled over to her booth, sitting down across from her. She looks you over, taking a drag from her cigarette before smirking at you.
"I haven't seen you around before, you new to Arcadia Bay?" She asked, and you nodded. She grinned and put out her cigarette, leaning across the table toward you. You noted she smelled like smoke and strawberries, and you rather liked it.
"Welcome to Arcadia Bay..."
