Ding, ding, ding.
The sound of the small bell coming from the tiny kitchen in the back of the diner rang through my ears as I rushed around the restaurant, taking orders, cleaning tables, and making sure the customers needs were satisfied. It was currently boiling hot in this small building and we were extremely busy. It was around ninety degrees outside and it was getting pretty close to that temperature on the inside.
"Faith! Order up!" I turned my head to where the sound of my name being called came from, noticing many plates of hot food on the counter, waiting for me. I then rushed to the diner counter, grabbing the four plates and balancing them on my arms after smiling at my co-worker, Maggie.
I delivered every plate of food to their rightful owners before washing down the empty tables. I then refilled the napkin dispensers on every open table before running to the entrance to seat new customers. As I did that, I noticed the time.
3:42 p.m.
"Crap! I'm late!" I shouted before ripping off the apron that was wrapped around my thin waist. I then threw it in the bucket with the dirty dishes that I picked up from tables, before throwing that on the counter and waving good bye to Maggie.
I jogged out of the diner then, tripping over my own two feet on the way. I am quite the clumsy person. I'm like a walking disaster. After running for a good five minutes, I took a left turn, heading straight for Gulfport Grammar School. Right outside of it, sitting on a bench like every single day were my two little sisters; Paige and Lily.
"You're late." Paige said with her cute, bubbly voice while she crossed her arms over her chest. "Again." I let out a small sigh as she mocked me for being late for the fifth time in one month.
"I know, I know. I'm sorry." I smiled and grabbed her bag as her and Lily stood up to follow me home. "You both know I always get caught up in work."
"Faith, you're always working or focusing on school, do you ever have fun?" Lily asked me. Lily was the second oldest out of my three younger sisters. She was eleven years old and she was in the fifth grade. She really isn't your normal eleven year old. She sometimes acts as if she was more mature than a normal child would be. She always has an opinion on something and she is very smart. Paige is a different story. She is always smiling and loves being happy. If she isn't playing with you, she is talking your ear off. She is only seven years old and she is in the second grade. She is not a shy little girl, but the opposite.
"Of course I have fun. I just need to focus right now and help Mom earn some extra money." I told her as we walked towards Gulfport's middle school to pick up my other little sister, Gia.
Once we got there, I saw that Gia was outside talking to a group of boys and I noticed a group of girls were giving her dirty looks from the corner. I rolled my eyes as Gia flirted with the six guys before walking over to her and grabbing her wrist, pulling her away from them.
"Hey! I was talking to them!" She protested as I rolled my eyes once again.
"No Gia, you were flirting with them and making enemies with those girls." I pointed to the girls in the corner. She turned her head towards them before rolling her eyes and facing me again.
"They're just jealous that I can get guys and they can't." I gaped at her cockiness. My sister never used to be like this. She was exactly like Paige when she was younger, but once she reached junior high, hell broke loose.
Gia is fourteen and in eighth grade. She is your typical teenage girl. She gives you attitude, she loves boys, and she uses music to block out her problems. She dresses to impress and covers her face in make up while trying to make other girls jealous of her.
