Justin sat by the island as Katy was preparing dinner for three. After she realised that her father had hung up on her, the two of them retreated to the kitchen.
"I still do not understand why you had to tell him," Justin mumbled. He was not necessarily mad at Katy, just mad at himself for putting Katy in such a situation.
Katy sighed, "Could you peel and dice about three potatoes for me, please?" She had grown tired of hearing the same phrase since they left her room.
"Katy, I am talking to you." Justin stoop up from his chair and took exactly three potatoes from the vegetable basket.
"Yes, Justin, I have the ability to hear and I heard you. Either way, you did not ask me a question so technically I do not have to reply."
"Katy," Justin warned, a growl emitting from his throat in the process.
"What? What are you going to do? You are the one who has been on my case about telling my dad about us. Now that I have told him, to still have something to say so what exactly do you want from me? And don't you dare growl at me!" She yelling, using her hands excessively to show her frustration.
"I just want you to be happy!" He yelled with frustration that matched his mate's.
"And you don't think that telling my dad about us is going to make me happy? When did you graduate from 'What makes Katy happy school'?"
Instead of answering, Justin giggled and then slowly his giggle turned into a full blown laugh.
Katy was beyond confused when she asked, "What are you laughing at? This is serious."
Justin set the potatoes in his hand down and clutched his stomach trying to regain his breath and spoke, "I am so sorry, my love but 'What makes Katy happy school'? When do you think of these things?"
She looked defeated as she dropped her hands to her sides and just stared at justin who was now walking towards her. He engulfed her in a hug, causing her to giggle and then laugh as he had before, Justin joining her.
When their laughter died down, Justin pulled away and smiled at Katy who also did the same.
The door banging pulled them out of their intense stare. "My dad," Katy whispered causing Justin to immediately move away from her as he stood up straight. The two busied themselves with the cooking they had been doing before.
Mr Smith cleared his throat when he entered the kitchen. The pair turned slowly around in unison, as if the act had been practiced multiple times.
"Dad. Hey." Katy greeted awkwardly, going over to hug the stiff man, who did not return the hug. When she pulled away, her father greeted her boyfriend with a slight nod, "Justin."
"Mr Smith," Justin returned the gesture, dropping the potato and peeler in his hand and walked towards his -if things went well- future father-in-law.
"So, you two are an item now, huh?" Mr Smith stated in a questioning manner.
Katy could not help but to swing on her heels as she clasped her hands together and faced the floor. Something urged her to go over to Justin's side but she feared that her dad would rip both their heads off.
"Yes, maybe, I guess." Her nervousness could easily be mistaken for confusion but having lived with her daughter alone for almost four years now, Kevin could tell that Katy was extremely nervous.
She huffed and willed herself to look into her dad's eyes and say, "The food is almost ready dad. May we please talk about this at the table?"
Mr Smith only raised a questioning brow and forced a smile before silently exiting the room.
--
"So, how long has this been going on for?" Mr Smith asked, stabbing at his salad continously.
"About a year," Katy replied.
Kevin chuckled, "You could have at least said a week but I appreciate your honesty. And you like him?"
The question caused her to slightly choke on her food as she began coughing vigorously. Justin poured her a glass of water and rubbed her back until she calmed down.
"Yes, I like him," she said.
