Chapter 11: The Devil's Cave
Aiden's P.O.V:
So I guess Carter kind of hated me right now.
I'd gone over to her house to hang out and eat pizza, but instead got yelled at and locked out of her door. I didn't even know what I did!
So yeah, I admit I was angry as hell when I saw her kissing that idiot's cheek. But that's only because I don't trust him! He was about to make a move on Carter, I know it.
So of course I had to jump in and distract her. But I guess she wasn't very grateful, as she yelled at me for swooping in like that. At least I got her away from him.
But I couldn't stop replaying her words in my head.
That I hadn't been a good friend. And that Connor was a better friend.
Was I being replaced?
There I went again. Thinking about myself. I think that's why Carter was so pissed with me. I wasn't spending time with her, and instead spending time with other girls.
I was neglecting my best friend.
"Well, that won't be happening anymore," I said, getting up and grabbing my phone.
I debated on whether or not to call Carter, since I knew there was still a possibility she'd throw something at me. But I'd never know if I didn't try.
"Hello?" She answered.
She didn't sound as mad as earlier.
"Hey Cart. I was thinking......maybe we could go do something together?" I asked.
There was a long pause on the other side, which meant she was thinking about it.
"Why don't you ask one of the girls you've got on speed dial?" She replied.
Okay, so maybe she was still a little angry.
"Because I want to spend time with you. Like you said, we hardly ever get to hang out anymore. Please?" I asked.
I anticipated a no. She was just stubborn like that.
"Okay. Where do you want to go?" She asked.
I had to take to second to believe what I was hearing.
"How about the carnival?" I suggested.
"Really? I've been wanting to go actually. Come pick me up?" She asked.
I smiled to myself.
"Yeah. Be over in ten."
It was time to start being a better best friend. And I was going to make sure that started today.
~
"I'm hungry," Carter groaned, for about the 50th time.
"I told you I'd buy you a corn dog," I replied.
"Corn dogs are gross though! That floury coating is just disgusting!" She said, scrunching up her face.
"Literally cannot believe you don't like them," I said, shaking my head.
"Sorry that I'm not a human vacuum that sucks all food into my mouth," She retorted.
"Hey, how about I buy you some cotton candy? Typical carnival food, right?" I asked.
"Yes! I LOVE cotton candy!" She replied, growing excited.
"Knew it. I'll be right back," I said, walking to the cotton candy stand.
There was a pretty girl working the stand, that looked about a year or two older.
"Hi," She said, smiling flirtatiously.
I had to be a good friend to Carter. No flirting.
"Hi. Can I guess a large cotton candy?" I replied, taking out my wallet.
"You going to eat that all by yourself?" She asked, biting her lower lip.
"Nah. But I'm going to share it with that girl over there," I responded, pointing towards Carter.
She spotted us and waved.
"Oh. That'll be $12," She said quickly.
Talk about being overpriced. Oh well. As long as it made Carter happy.
"Thanks," I said, grabbing a bag.
I strode over to Carter, glowing.
"Here you go."
She smiled.
"I'm very proud of you, Miller. You actually ignored that pretty girl," She said, tearing a piece of cotton candy off.
I shrugged.
"I have self-control."
She snorted.
"Doesn't seem that way at school!"
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Well....for starters you're ALWAYS dating girls. Even if you don't know them," she laughed, "oh, and you flirt with almost every living and breathing female that walks past."
Was that really true? Did I do that? Did I actually flirt with EVERY girl? No, that wasn't possible.
"Really?" I asked.
Carter half-smiled.
"Yeah."
I knew she wouldn't lie to me. I took her word for it.
"Well, I'm sorry Cart. It's probably irritating when I don't tie myself down to one girl. And you have to deal with all the bitchy ex-girlfriends. You know what? I'm going to make you a promise. I promise to stop the flirting, stop the incessant dating, and TRY to choose a girl I like," I said.
She nodded.
"That's good, Aiden. I'm happy for you."
If she was happy for me, why did she sound so sad?
"You know, I really like Paige. I've only known her for a couple days, but she seems just my type. We're really similar. I mean, we've both got good looks," I joked, elbowing her stomach.
"Hah. Hah," Carter replied, her lips forming a straight line.
"Well, besides the fact, she's really nice. Someone I could potentially be in a relationship with," I said.
Carter only nodded, stuffing pieces of cotton candy in her mouth.
"What do you think? Should I go for her?" I asked.
Carter's opinion mattered to me a lot, since she was often a good judge of character.
"Well, what do you think? Can you honestly and truly handle being in a long-term relationship? Do you think you'll break her heart? And the biggest and most important question of all: is her personality one of morals and kindness?" She asked.
I slowly went over each question in my head.
Could I handle a long-term relationship?
Well.......I'd never done it before. But there was always a first time for everything.
Would I break her heart?
Well........there was no telling, really. Obviously I'd had a reputation for breaking girls' hearts. But I couldn't tell if I would or not.
And according to Carter, the most important question: did she have a good personality?
I didn't know, to be honest. Like I'd said, I had only known her for a couple days.
"I can't answer any of those," I sighed, sitting down on a bench.
Carter sat next to me, crossing her legs.
"I know you can't. I just don't want you to rush into things, you know?" She said, resting her head on my shoulder.
"I know. I think I'll just get to know Paige before I ask her out. Good?" I asked.
I swear I saw some emotion flicker across her face before she smiled. Was I crazy, or did she seem sad?
"Good. Come on, let's go hit up some rides!" She said, pulling me up.
I was just crazy.
"What do you want to go on?" She asked, scoping out the rides.
I stuck my hands in my pockets and squinted, spotting something I'd heard time and time about.
The Devil's Cave.
"That. We have to go in there!" I said, pointing towards the walk-through.
"That's not a ride, bozo," Carter pointed out.
"Bozo? At least I'm not the one who's too afraid to go in the Devil's Cave!" I shot back, placing a hand on my hip.
"So? It's perfectly normal to be scared of creepy walk-throughs! And anyways, it's not even Halloween!" She stated.
"And? I like being freaked out all times of the year."
"Don't you mean you like being a freak all times of the year?" She asked.
"Wow. I admit that was a nice comeback. But no, really. Let's go! Please?" I asked, jutting out my bottom lip.
She stood in her spot, a nervous expression crossing her face.
"I'm really not looking forward to dying anytime soon."
"You won't! I'll keep you safe. Come on, just hold onto my hand the whole time. It's not like the people who dress up with eat you," He assured.
"Uh, they possibly will. It's like those freaky-ass movies where the actors end up being actual psychos and chopping our heads off!" She retorted, taking a step back.
"Please. That was a movie," I said.
"Yeah, that you made me watch!" She replied.
"Better than your girly chick-flicks!"
Carter gasped.
"How dare you insult the beauty of chick flicks! They're great!"
"Yeah, only in your crazy imagination. Now come one!" I said, grabbing her hand and dragging her to the Devil's Cave.
"Any place that's called the Devil's Cave is probably not safe," Carter said.
"Just close your eyes if you really can't handle it," I replied.
"You seriously suck. I hope you fall in a bush or something," She hissed.
"A bush? Really?" I asked, cracking a smile.
"Shut up! It's all I could think of at the time! Now look ahead, we're about to enter hell," She frowned, gripping my arm.
As we entered the dark building, I could feel the rush of adrenaline flowing through me. This was going to be epic.
"I can't see!" Carter yelled.
"I think we're coming to a light area," I replied.
"BLEH!" Someone screamed.
"HOLY FUDGE!!" Carter cried out, jumping onto my back.
I looked up and spotted a demon-like creature retreating into the corner.
"It's fine! Just actors," I said, setting her down.
"Not okay! That thing was disgusting!" She said.
"Just calm down. You're making it out to be worse than it actually is," I replied.
She muttered something under her breath before continuing on.
A hissing noise emerged from the corner, causing Carter to nearly claw my arm off.
"No, no, no!" She yelled.
A clown with a cleaver came out, blood splattered over his outfit.
"I HATE CLOWNS!" Carter yelled, running off.
"Wait, Carter!" I groaned, fast-walking to keep up with her.
"Carter?" I asked, getting worried.
What if she was right about the whole actors being real murderers thing?
"Hey Aiden," A voice said, causing me to jump.
"Wow for a guy who said this wouldn't be scary, you sure jumped at the sound of my voice," Carter said, hopping over to grab my shoulder.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Oh, I kind of tripped on a step I didn't notice. My knees are a bit scraped, but it shouldn't be too bad," She replied.
I brought my arm under hers to support her more.
"Okay, maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Let's get out of here," I said.
"Nah. Let's keep going. I don't think anything can scare me anymore after that fall," She replied.
"Well, only if you say so. Don't say I didn't warn you, though," I said.
We plowed through, with zombies, more clowns, possessed hospital patients, and chainsaw killers chasing after us.
Carter didn't yell once.
"Wow, you really didn't get scared," I said, once out of the Devil's Cave.
"Yeah, cause I was too busy cringing at my throbbing knee," She responded.
"Oh! Let me take a look at that," I said, kneeling down to roll up her jeans.
Once I got to the knee, my eyes widened.
"Yeah, that doesn't look too good, Cart...."
"What? What's wrong?" She asked.
"Your knees are severely bruised under all of that blood," I replied.
She looked down and gasped.
"Oh my God! There's blood everywhere! We need to leave," She stated, attempting to wobble off.
She nearly fell again, as I came around and put her on my back.
"You can't really walk right now. I'll just carry you to the car," I said, jogging off.
"I'm heavy though!" She complained.
"Really, you're not."
"But-"
"Carter! It's okay," I interrupted.
She huffed but agreed.
As we finally reached my car, I was careful to set her down easily. She couldn't handle another injury.
"So, I guess you don't handle haunted houses too well," I said, starting up my car.
"Or Devil's Caves for that matter," She added.
"I'm sorry for dragging you in there. Maybe not the smoothest move," I said, driving off.
"It's fine. It made me less of a wimp. Way less of a wimp," She replied, smiling.
"True. Anyway, how about we get you on home? We should get you cleaned up," I said.
She nodded.
"And Aiden?" She said.
I glanced over.
"Yeah?" I replied.
Carter gripped my hand and smiled.
"Thank you for taking me out," She said, kissing my cheek.
I felt a weird feeling flare up inside me- like, I don't know. A tingling. A strange tingling.
I shrugged off whatever....that was and smiled back.
"Anything for you, Cart. Anything for you," I said, squeezing her hand.
~
Carter's P.O.V:
"Holy crap that stings!" I screamed, flailing like a crazed chicken.
"Sit still!" Aiden huffed, dousing my whole leg in rubbing alcohol.
"OW OW OW! OH LORDY!" I yelled, rolling on the floor in pain.
"Jeez, you won't get better if you keep moving like that!" Aiden scolded, holding me down.
"I wouldn't be moving around if you'd just dabbed the rubbing alcohol! You practically dumped the whole bottle on my leg!" I replied.
"Okay, so maybe I wouldn't be the best doctor. But at least your injury is clean, right?" He said, shrugging.
"Yeah, and BURNING FROM THE INSIDE OUT!" I said.
"That means it's working," He winked, helping me up.
"If my skin burns off completely, I'd just like you to know that I'm blaming this all on you," I notified, hobbling to my bed.
Aiden sat next to me, smiling.
"That's okay. Because your leg isn't going to burn off."
"Well it certainly feels that way."
"But nothing'll happen."
"What if something did happen?" I asked.
"Then I'd die," He replied.
"Why?" I questioned.
"Because I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something had ever happened to you," He said, half-smiling.
I couldn't help it. My heart pounded furiously in my chest- so much I thought it'd burst out.
"Aiden, I-"
"Carter! There's a visitor at the door for you!" My mom called.
"Okay mom!" I replied, slipping off of my bed.
"Here, let me help you," Aiden offered, slinking his arm around mine.
"Thanks," I smiled.
Aiden led me downstairs to where my mom stood, a grin radiating off of her face.
"Why the creepy grin?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Someone's here for you!" She said.
"Really? Is it Katie?" I asked.
She shook her head.
"Better!"
I shrugged and hobbled forward, to my doorstep.
"BOO!" Someone screamed.
"OH MY GOSH!" I yelled, falling down my front steps.
I shut my eyes tightly, anticipating hitting hard concrete. However, I never did. I opened one eye and spotted Connor holding me.
"Connor!" I said, laughing.
He smiled.
"You should be more careful. You never know what monsters are lurking around out here," He teased, propping me back up.
"Hmm, you mean like one named Con-Con?" I asked.
"Exactly!" He replied.
From the doorway I heard a loud scoff. I looked up and saw Aiden standing there, his arms crossed.
"Hey Aiden," Connor said.
"Yeah. I'm going to go home now Cart. I had fun today," He said, waving.
"Bye Aiden! Thank you so much for taking me out!" I said, waving back.
I turned back around, hitting Connor's chest.
"Oh, sorry," I mumbled, regaining my posture.
"What happened to your knee?" He asked, kneeling down to examine the scrape.
"A little....complication earlier. It's better now," I assured.
"Uh-huh. Sure," He said.
"Well, what do you need?" I asked, changing the topic.
Connor grinned, showing off his perfect teeth.
"We still had a bet. And I suppose I'd like to fulfill it now and get it over with," He replied.
"Alright then, mister. It's getting a bit late, so maybe after school tomorrow? We'll go shopping for your attire," I replied.
He nodded.
"Sounds good. But just so you know, Kit-Kat, I'm going to be the hottest woman you've ever seen," He said, walking back to his house.
And somehow, I didn't doubt his words.
(A/N) Yay! Update! :) More should be coming since now it's WINTER BREAK! Woo!!
Anyway, the thought for this chapter came to me one day when I was just sitting in my room. It's based on a true story that happened to me, sadly. So basically what happened was I went to this haunted thing near Halloween time. It was held on a farm in the middle of nowhere and home-made actually. So, there were three attractions at this place: The haunted forest, the haunted house, and the haunted hayride.
My friends and I went on the hayride first, which wasn't that scary but still made me scream like a baby. THEN, we went into the haunted house. Before we went in, they handed us these 3D glasses and I was like, okay. Weird. So we went in and I literally felt like I was on LSD or something because my vision was really f'd up. Anyway, there was a freaking clown after us and OF COURSE I was at the front of the line.
I ended up tripping on a step and heading knee first into REALLY spiky metal. I was hobbling the rest of the time, and when we left, I got home to check the damage. One of my knees was bloody. The next day, both knees were bruised SOOO bad and hurt like a mother fudger.
So, yeah. End of story! Haha, nice, right? So this chapter's based on my terrible experience with clowns and haunted houses! XD
Well, thanks for the reads! Keep 'em up!
