Chapter 39: It's Only the Beginning
I stared at Aiden for a good two minutes before he cracked a grin.
"You know I'm still not telling you where we're going, right?" He stated, reaching over his seat to pinch my cheek.
I swatted his hand away and groaned in reply.
"Why are you boys so intent on keeping dates a secret? It's quite dumb, if you ask me," I snorted, turning to face the window.
It looked like we were headed towards the forest due to the large amount of pine trees that laid on the sides of the road.
"Can't a guy surprise his girlfriend without being chastised?" Aiden asked.
"No - he can't," I replied, grinning.
"I'll give you a hint.....neigh neigh," he said.
"Neigh neigh? What, are we going to play a game of charades in the forest?" I questioned.
He snorted.
"Yeah, sure. Let's go with that."
"I'm fine with charades, or anything really. As long as running or any sort of physical activity is not involved," I stated.
Aiden chuckled, running his fingers through his hair.
"Honey, you've got a big storm a comin'."
"Oh, great. I bet it involves running, hiking, swimming, and even climbing a tree. Knowing you it's probably something crazy," I replied.
"Normally I'd plan something crazy - but today it's pretty normal. I'm sure you'll enjoy it," he reassured.
I didn't reply and instead leaned my head against the window, feeling the vibration from the bumps in the road as I did so.
Aiden and I were enveloped in silence for a solid twenty minutes when the car finally reached a stop. My head snapped up at the braking of the car and checked our current surroundings.
"Tejon Ranch," I said aloud, slowly stepping out of the car.
I stretched my sleeping legs and waited for Aiden to reach my side.
"Are you excited?" Aiden asked.
I plastered a fake smile onto my face.
"Of course! I love....ranches...."
He laughed and led me inside of a large, blue barn.
"It gets better."
Inside the barn sat your typical farm animals; pigs, cows, goats, and even a few chickens that freely roamed the area.
"So...are we picking out a chicken to take home?" I questioned.
He shook his head and led me to the back of the barn, where a loud noise erupted.
"Johnny?" Aiden yelled.
Instead of a reply, an old man wobbled out of nowhere and stood in front of us, rubbing his gray beard.
"Who are you?" He asked, his course voice coming out loudly.
"I'm Aiden Miller. I booked a riding for the day," he replied.
