Chapter 30: Three Fundamental Truths: Number Two

"Go and wake up Severus, Madison, Harry," Dumbledore gravely told us as we marched into the castle. "Tell him what happened. Do nothing else. I will wait here."

Together, Harry and I hurried towards the dungeon. We only got a good few steps in until we heard footsteps.

Dumbledore gave us the motion to retreat.

Harry and I pulled out our wands, ready to put up a fight.

A voice shouted, "Expelliarmus!"

However, I felt my body go rigid. I was unable to move. This was not the work of this spell... this was a freezing charm...

I glanced at Dumbledore. He had put it on us...

"Good evening, Draco," Dumbledore calmly stated, no panic or distress evident on his face.

Malfoy stepped forward. It was just him and Dumbledore from what he thought.

"Who else is here?" Malfoy frowned.

"A question I might ask you. Or are you acting alone?"

Malfoy' eyes shifted back to Dumbledore in the glare of the green light of the Mark above the tower.

"No," he began. "I've got back up. Death Eaters are here."

"Well, well," Dumbledore told Malfoy, almost impressed. "Very good indeed. You found a way to let them in, did you?"

What the hell was Dumbledore playing at?

"Yeah," Malfoy panted. "Right under your broken nose! And you never realized!"

"You must do it, my dear boy," Dumbledore said, softly.

Silence erupting in the tower. I felt trapped, invisible, unable to look at Harry. There were sounds of fighting between Death Eaters and most likely Aurors or Order members.

Shit. He was supposed to...

"Draco, you are not a killer," Dumbledore told him.

If I was able to move, I would have jumped up and punched the ferret. Sure, Dumbledore and I had our differences, but killing an old man was sort of rude.

"How do you know?" Draco asked, childishly.

Easy. If he was a killer, Dumbledore would be dead by now.

"You've been trying to kill me all year. You almost killed Katie Bell and Ron Weasley in the process, but you have failed. Draco, they have been poor attempts. Your heart really isn't in it, is it?" Dumbledore told the boy.

"It has been in it!" Malfoy yelled. "All year I've been trying, and tonight-"

Malfoy stiffened up.

"Maybe you should do the job alone. What if your back up... what if they are stopped? I have no wand on me, Draco. I cannot defend myself."

Malfoy stared. He couldn't do it.

"You know, Professor Snape has been keeping tabs on you under my orders-"

"He hasn't been doing your orders, he promised my mother-"

Dumbledore interrupted him. "Of course, he'd want you to think that-"

"HE IS A DOUBLE AGENT, YOU STUPID GEEZER! YOU JUST THINK HE IS!" Malfoy exclaimed.
