The moon reached its peak and the stars above me shone bright. The wind blew my hair around my face and began to chill me. My body began to shake and shiver with goose bumps growing on all my exposed skin. I ignored the blistering cold and stayed seated in my spot. It wasn’t the cold that was bothering me anymore, it felt more like a wakeup call letting me know this is reality and no realistic dream. My legs grew numb and as much as I hated the very thought, it was time for me to get up. I wasn’t quite ready to go in yet though. So my alternative was roaming through the garden. I zigzagged between the 7 foot high bush walls as I went through a little maze. I was in no hurry to leave so I relaxed turning each corner as I pleased. I was relaxed, that is until I heard a high pitched annoying laugh come from just around the corner. I pressed myself against the wall slowly inching closer and closer to the end of the bush. I peeped my head around and saw no other than Prince Riley and a preppy princess. She had one hand winding her hair around her index finger while the other rested unnaturally on the prince’s chest. The grin on her face was humongous, also very unnatural. She looked like a kid on a sugar high to me, her tiara had to be slightly too tight, cutting the circulation to her head.. He said something I couldn’t quite catch and she laughed a little too loudly and a little too long. He gave a small half smile. I had seen that look before. I was trying to choke down a laugh when he looked up and met my eyes. I froze like a deer in the headlights. It took me a moment to realize what was going on before I swung back around out of sight. I gathered the ends of my dress and ran through the maze, looking over my shoulder to make sure I was truly alone. I saw the opening in front of me and I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing I was in the clear. I slowed from a run to a walk.
“Well, well, well, there you are nosy. I guess you couldn’t stand to not be with me until next week. I understand, that happens a lot.” He smiled a dumb little smirk I wanted to slap off his face so badly.
“Why do you still need me? What happened to your little poodle back there? You know the one that was practically drooling over you.”
“I wouldn’t last one hour with her. But with you on the other hand.” His smirk only got bigger and he took a huge step towards me snaking his arm around my waist.
“Woah pal! You seem to be forgetting that I don’t actually like you!”
“Right.” Riley winked at me. A strong breeze blew past us and I shivered, my teeth chattering.
“Here.” He took of his fancy prince coat and placed it over my shoulders.
“Thanks.”
“We’ll I have nothing to do better, and it seems neither do you so let’s take a walk shall we?” I was positive that the last sentence was a question but he made it sound like more of a demand.
I walked with him anyway. We strolled first between the rows of gorgeous flowers. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath savoring the sweet aroma. For once my mind was clear and I felt at ease. The moonlight shone down on us and soon we were far away from the castle with no other artificial light anywhere.
“It’s pretty out here.”
“Sure is. For once it’s nice to be out of the palace and get the chance to relax for a change. I don’t get to do this often. But I’m sure a maid like you does.”
“Not at all! I work just as hard as you do!” I crossed my arms across my chest. The memory of tutoring Prince Andrew came back to my mind.
‘Well, maybe not as hard.” I muttered. A calm silence fell upon us. Even though with most people it would be awkward, this was different. It almost felt as though we were still communicating without saying a single word. We kept walking among the rows side by side. Soon we even ran out of paths to walk so we went down ones we had been by before. I didn’t mind, I was enjoying myself.
We passed a rose bush and I stopped going over to a particular bright red one, fully in bloom.
“You like roses?” The prince asked from behind me.
“They are my favorite.” I put my nose close to the petals and sniffed the petals.
When I had turned around the Prince was smiling. Not a devilish smirk, or a half smile, but an actual smile. With each passing row he stepped closer and closer to me. I felt his arm sneak around my back and rest on my shoulder pulling me closer to him. Usually I would have shoved his arm off and would have stomped off in a rage, but I kinda liked this and didn’t mind one bit. I snuggled closer into him resting my head on his shoulder. I breathed in his fresh cologne and almost melted. Not only did he look gorgeous, he smelled gorgeous.
“You know, I could stay like this forever.” I whispered to myself not knowing he had heard.
“Me too.” Prince Riley said giving my shoulder a squeeze.
So I kinda want to see where you guys are at so far so I know if I need to improve anything in the next ch. Riley and Kaitlynn have just met. And here are some questions if you guys could answer I would be grateful.
Does Riley have a sweet side? Should Kaitlynn stay away from him or get closer? Is Riley all bad? Do you think something made him this way or has he always been like this.
Please answer one or more of these in the comments, please and thank you :)
