Whenever it rains,

we find ourselves in the library again.

We sit across from each other

reading our books.

Sometimes our eyes meet

and she gives me a smile,

but it's only for a second.

Today, it'll be the same,

as the rain falls like needles from the sky.

She walks through the entrance,

hair dangling, dripping.

Maybe she talks to the shy girl

at the front desk,

asks if a book she's waiting for is finally in.

Then she sits two desks across from me

and pulls out the same novel she's been reading for weeks now.

Sometimes, her bangs fall over her eyes

and she brushes them to the side.

She always props her left elbow on the table,

leans her chin on her palm

as her slim fingers flip through the pages of another world.

But she doesn't show up today.
