⌠ 1 ⌡
We talked until
the sunset burned the sky.
Then she was gone,
as quickly
as she came.
A simple wave.
A simple goodbye.
Her footsteps echoing
through the library.
I sit in silence
looking at my book.
The words don't stay still.
Drifting
like blossoms
in a pond.
Outside,
streetlights start
to blink awake,
one by one.
Footsteps fading
past the gates.
Their voices
and laughter
all overlapping
into something
almost
soothing.
I realize.
I've only ever watched it.
The calm
of people who belong.
They keep walking,
knowing it can hurt.
Even through that
lingering doubt.
I stayed here,
safe in the stillness.
But lately,
the silence feels
a bit smaller.
⌠ 2 ⌡
It's raining today,
and she comes with it.
She sits there again,
but this time
her book lies closed
in front of her.
Just watching the droplets
slide gently down the windows.
"Yura," I say.
"Hey."
I sit across from her.
"You took my seat again."
"First come, first served."
"Is this a race now?"
"We can make it one."
She sweeps her bangs
behind an ear.
Waiting.
"What?" I say.
She coughs,
gesturing with her hand.
"My coffee?"
"You really..."
"I thought it was a deal."
"How about my sandwich?"
"But it's raining today."
"Excuses."
"You like that about me, right?"
"Who said?"
"Me."
Her voice quiets, barely.
Like she didn't mean it.
I take my novel out.
"Did you finish your book already?"
"Almost."
"Slowpoke."
"You're one to talk."
She smiles softly. Then, gone.
The rain roars forever.
But she's here,
and that's enough.
