Chapter Two - Existence
"Hey mom we're back" I yelled out while shutting the door.
"Hi honey. How was school you two?" She called back.
There was a clunk. I moved toward the living room avoiding all the boxes and newspaper. Sarah had her black hair in a ponytail moving the coffee table. I saw Ray lying on the coach.
"Got the furniture in?" I asked.
"Yep. We put your stuff upstairs. You can rearrange it if you want" She said.
Ray moaned in pain on the coach.
"What happened to him?" I asked.
"Oh he threw out his back picking up the coach."
"It was light." Ray said.
"Tell that to your back." She snapped.
"Mom, mom," Ashley said in a hurry, "look what I made." She gave her a picture of some sort of scenery.
"Well it's beautiful, honey. This will be the first picture on the refrigerator. Why don't you put it up?" She smiled at Ashley.
"Okay." Ash said as she ran off with it.
"So Emily how was your first day of school?" Sarah asked.
"Fine"
"Meet any new friends?"
"A couple"
"What are their names?"
"Jamie and Sophia"
"Is Jamie a boy?"
"Mom, please not today"
"Okay, okay I won't get in it. But is he cute?"
"Mom!"
"Okay, shutting up."
I walked upstairs hoping my mother won't ever mention that again. She doesn't need to know everything. When I walked in my room the dresser was on the left side of the wall in the corner. My T.V was on a stand across the end of my bed and my tan love seat was in front of the end of my bed. She said I could rearrange but it looks good. There are still boxes everywhere though. I better un-pack the rest.
I started taking out my clothes first and putting them in my dresser. Then little things like my alarm clock, picture frames, books, little trinkets, and my favorite stuffed animal, Fluffy the wolf. He's gray and white with silver eyes. I've had him since I was little. My mom said I used to take him everywhere and that I used to talk to him.
I laughed at the thought of it. I set him on my bed and looked at myself in the mirror.
Why did Jamie ask if I was adopted? Now that he mentioned it, I don't look like my mom at all. She always said I looked like my dad. But he had brown hair and my mom has black so . . . where did I get the blonde hair from? Maybe Jamie is right. Maybe I was adopted. But how would he know?
"Mom!" I yelled while running out of my room down the stairs.
"What? What? Are you hurt?" She asked panicking.
"No, no I'm fine I was just wonder -." I stopped debating whether I should ask.
"Yes?" She said while removing newspaper from a glass figure.
"Was . . . well," Oh just get it out. "Was I adopted?" I asked quickly.
She didn't answer. Her face went to a sad and blank expression. Sarah put the glass figure on the shelf. I could feel Ray's eyes on me.
