Chapter Sixteen - Truth
In the middle of the night I couldn't sleep. Jamie was fast asleep. He's so peaceful asleep. I don't want to wake him. If I go really quietly maybe he won't wake up.
I took the covers off me and got off the bed. The floor creaked as I stood up. I walked quietly to the door and went out. There was a big change of the temperature. It was colder than Jamie's room. I went downstairs. The fire in the fire place was still warm. I put a log in the fire. It started to burn and the fire got larger. If Sophia didn't pick clothes that showed so much skin I'd probably be warmer.
I wore a silky shirt and pants. The shirt was a black spaghetti strap. I sat on my knees watching the fire. The orange, yellow, red, and blue colors flashed around while burning the wood up. It's strange how fire is hot. What makes it burn stuff. What makes it different colors?
I wonder . . .
I put my hand out to put it in the fire.
"What are you doing?"
I gasped and stood up quick. Jamie stood there by the stairs. He had a black under shirt on and black plaid pants.
"Nothing." I said.
He rubbed his eyes. "It's three in the morning. What are you doing up?"
"I couldn't sleep."
"You could have woken me up."
"I didn't want to."
There was a silent pause.
"Listen; there has been something on my mind. You're not going to like it but, you're going to have to do it." Jamie said very serious.
"What is it?" I asked.
"On Thursday, you know how we're supposed to go see that guy?"
"Yeah?"
"To get rid of your pain," he crossed his arms in front of his chest, "he has to turn back time and change the past."
"I don't get where you're going with this." I said.
"After Thursday, you're not going to see me again."
"What do you mean? I thought you said he was going to heal me."
"By not letting us meet. If we never met Riley would have never done this. You'll still have the memories because we're wolves but we won't see each other."
"Isn't there another way?"
"No, there's not."
"Does that mean I have two days with you and Sophia and everyone else?"
He nodded. "Yeah."
"Then I just won't go. I -."
"You're going Emily. I shouldn't have even told you."
"You weren't going to tell me?"
"No, because I knew you were going to make a big deal out of it."
"It is a big deal. How long have you known this?"
"Since Saturday."
"You knew this whole time and didn't tell me."
He nodded. "I'm sorry. This is the only way you won't die."
"I - I just met you, I don't want to lose you."
"I'm sorry." He whispered.
Words popped in my head reminding me of what I said. 'I wish I never met you.' When I said that, I didn't really want it to happen. I tried not to cry. I'll still have the memories, right? Ya, but I won't ever see him again.
