I wake up to the sun streaming through my window. I bolted up, ran downstairs, grabbed a blittlenberry muffin to go, and ran out the door.
"Sophie, where do you think you're going?" Edaline asks, hands on her hips.
"Um, to look for Keefe," I shrug casually.
"Sophie, Grady and I told you already! We don't want you over there! It's dangerous--"
"Everything about me is dangerous! Why can't I do this? Didn't you guys sign up for this when you adopted me?" I shout in frustration.
"Sophie! We are just looking out for you! And don't you ever take that tone with me ever again!" Edaline scolds, I groan. "Sander! Make sure Sophie stays in there," Edaline yells, going back to helping the Verminion.
I groan as I trudge back into the house.
Please let him be okay.
I slam the door behind me. Sander is about to ask if I'm okay when I collapse on my bed.
I mumble into my pillow.
This is awful.
Waiting.
~~~
I open up my eyes, a thought occurs to me.
Why not try opening my mind to everyone's voices?
Oh my gosh! It's perfect! I shoot up excitedly, closing my eyes and search through the swarm of memories.
Come on Keefe, think!
I search for hours until I feel strong arms wrap around me.
"Sophie, it's okay. I've got you. Sophie, stop, the strain!" The deep male voice shouts.
He shakes me and the I loose the connection.
My eyes slowly flutter open.
"Sophie, you really shouldn't do that, you know what's happening to your abilities," Elwin whispers gravely.
"Wait, what's happening to her abilities?" Grady asks angrily. I look at Edaline.
"Grady, I think we should talk outside," Edaline says, taking charge.
"You knew and didn't tell me?" Grady huffs, nostrils flaring.
"Grady, we will take this outside," Edaline talks through gritted teeth. Grady growls, but follows.
"The council wants to talk to you," Elwin whispers, "Also, thanks for rescuing me along with Dex," He looks at me. I can still feel his stare as I leave.
"Edalin--Oh,"
"Really?"
"Are you sure?"
"I guess, but this isn't over," I hear Grady mumble.
"Sophie, the council wants to take you to meet someone," Edaline sighs.
I walk forward. I don't talk as the lead me through the sickening green light.
~~~
I look around to see forests on either side of me. We walk down a barely visible dusty path. Grass grows in between the cracks. I stay silent as we reach the withered down cottage.
"Sophie, you are about to meet Dedilly. Dedilly happens to be our only oracle. She--"
"Predicts profices and the future?" I ask, vaguely thinking about Percy Jackson.
"Not quiet, but she can see your future, or a possibility," Bronte rolled his eyes.
I walked in, wind-chimes chinked as a soft breeze blew through the room. An old boney women with chalk dust hair in a tight braid turned. She smiled a toothy grin, though some were clearly missing. Her eyes were a ghostly blue, they swirled.
"Ah, what do we have here?" She asks cheerfully. She stumbles as she walks towards me.
"Sophie Foster, and we'd like to know her future," Emery says.
