Gage's POV

We are all sitting around the table laughing and talking with the team that Rae brought in. For some reason, I can't get her out of my head. I think she might be my mate. I know she is hiding her scent, I just don't know why. She is beautiful, that long red hair looks so soft, her eyes are like the midnight sky. Shit, I sound like a girl. I watch her as she gracefully moves around the kitchen. Smoke catches my eye and smirks  "Something catch your eye, Alpha?"   He says through our mind link. I glare at him. "You know something, Beta? I know she is hiding her scent. I think she is my mate. I just don't know why she would hide it from me."  He shrugs and grins. I turn my attention to the people sitting around my table, knowing Smoke isn't going to tell me what he knows, stupid Betas.
"So, how do you know Rae?"  I ask Xavier. He grins,  "She saved my life. It was about three years ago and our village was under siege. It was a demon attack. Filthy beasts, no offense, Justin. These demons were vicious,  feral beasts only focused on killing. Dragons are fierce warriors but we were severely outnumbered, ten demons to one dragon. It was going to be a slaughter. Then Rae shows up, swords blazing. She slashed through them like nothing. I have never seen anything like it. Demons are the second strongest of the species, they can be lost to the bloodlust and then there is no stopping them. She was on a different mission at the time when she caught the wave of demon bloodlust and made it there before we were all dead. We lost almost half of our village that day, but we could have lost them all if it wasn't for her. She told us about the HC and because of that, we begin the team, others affected by the lack of knowledge needed to protect themselves."  They all nodded and I was floored, Rae looks small and weak, but she is far from it.  "There isn't a person on the team that doesn't owe Rae their lives."  Elliot said solemnly. Natalie was next to speak.  "She found me hiding after a vampire attack. They had slaughtered my whole village. I was the only person left alive. I had hidden in a tree, waiting for vamps to leave, you see, Fae blood is almost impossible for vamps to resist. Elliot is fine because he only lives on animal blood. Plus, he is my mate. Anyways, there was a ring of vamps surrounding the tree I was hiding in. Before they could grab me, Rae took them out. It was amazing. It was like a bloody ballet. She is very graceful."  Natalie giggled and Rae snorted. Elliot threw his arm around her.  "Our coven was under attack from humans. Hunters that train to kill. We are faster and stronger but they had us severely outnumbered.  We were losing, big time. Rae bounds in there, guns blazing and took them out. She still had Nat with her and that's how I found her."  I grin and look at Smoke who looks shocked. Everyone laughs at our reaction. Justin smiles,  "Rae saved me from the HC. I was in prison for treason. My mate had already been executed. She was an angel and for loving someone that wasn't the same species, we were convicted of treason. She was just coming back from a mission and heard me crying, how, I don't know, but I told her my story and she broke me out and hid me from the HC. She was so sad she couldn't have saved my mate, but I don't blame her. When I met Lucy, my heart started to heal. She is my love now and I am happy."  Lucy squeezes his hand and meets my eyes,  "She saved me from killing myself. My mate had been murdered in front of me because he refused to bow to the HC. I didn't want to live, she said she felt my pain and stopped me. If it wasn't for her I would be dead and she lead me to Justin."  I smile at her. We all look at Gabe and he sighs,  "Fine, she saved me too. I am an Archangel, a warrior, I should never need help, but that day, I did and she was there. We were fighting giants, nasty creatures, they were on a rampage and we were trying to save a human town. They were trampling everything in their path. We had lost several warriors when Rae showed up and demolished all of them. She really is a Rae of light. Even if she doesn't believe it."  Gabe smirked at her as she set three large pans of lasagna on the table as well as a huge basket of garlic bread.  "If everyone is done with the hero stories, we should eat."  She huff's as she plops into her chair. We all laugh at her. She meets my eyes and it's like a punch in the gut. I can't look away. She smiles and winks,  "You should eat, Gage, before it's all gone, these boys have big appetites."  I laugh and dig into the best food I have ever eaten.
After dinner is done Rae stands and stretches,  "Have fun with the cleanup, I'm going for a cigarette."  Xavier and Smoke jump up and start cleaning, I go to help and Smoke turns to me.  " What are you waiting for, go talk to her. Shoo."  I open my mouth to reply and Xavier shoo's me out as well. I sigh and head outside to find Rae. She is sitting on the steps, smoking. So I plop down next to her. She turns to me and smile. I return it, " Dinner was really good."  She nods and we are locked, looking into each other's eyes.  "Just kiss her already, fuck!"   I hear Smoke through the mind link. I can't help the laugh that follows. She grins,  "Smoke is a smartass."
 "How did you know?"  I ask her, she laughs,  " Because your eyes change when you mind link and Smoke is watching us along with everyone else."  "Why?"  She looks at me with a look that says duh.  " Because they are waiting for this."  She says as she kisses me. Her lips are soft and sweet, which is shocking since we just had garlic. I pull her closer and deepen the kiss and I feel the sparks everywhere. We break for air and my forehead is resting against hers.  "Why did you hide it? You knew we are mates?"  She sighs and pulls back to look at me.  "Because, the HC will kill you, I can't have any distractions. Mates are a big one. That's the reason I decided it was time to end their rule."  The next thing I know she drops her walls and her scent hits me like a truck. Vanilla and cinnamon. How funny, she smells like a snickerdoodle. She looks at me like I have grown another head. "Really, Gage, a snickerdoodle?" Oh shit, I must have said that out loud. This brings a roar of laughter from the team,  " I told you they were watching." As their laughter slows, Tank hollers, "Hey, Snickerdoodle." Rae glares at him, then throws me a wink. The next thing we know, Tank is floating upside down, squealing. We all laugh.
