Camila POV
It was a long drive to our grandmother's house from the airport. I tapped the car's window nervously.
"Are we there yet?" Sofi lifted her head from my lap where she was sleeping throughout the car ride.
"Not yet" my uncle replied. He had picked us up from the airport and we did not exchange any words until now.
I looked out the window as we took a turn around my old school.
"WAIT" I yelled and grabbed my uncle's shoulder from behind
"What is it, Mila?" he asked with a hint of annoyance. I got out of the car and walked towards the abandoned building.
"I'll be right back." I replied and entered the broken gate. I ran my hands through the little swing on the front.
The school was very small and could only hold a handful of kids. It reminded me of our living conditions before we moved to the U.S.A. Dad couldn't afford to send me to a bigger school.
I left a part of my childhood right here. I closed my eyes and could still hear the laughter's echoing through the air on a bright sunny morning.
"Is this where I belong?" I asked myself as I walked up the broken steps into the halls. The doors of the classrooms were broken and some didn't even have doors. The hallway echoed of my footsteps.
I walked into a classroom and found an old picture of mine taped to a wall with some other students. The picture was half ruined with the moisture and torn in the corners.
I examined the picture, I was wearing a yellow dress with a white bow and standing next to my teacher. I smiled to myself and kept it into my pocket.
I walked towards the end of the classroom and examined the seats looking for my name or a sign for where I sat.
I found it eventually when a table had a terrible drawing of banana on it. I couldn't help but laugh as I traced the drawing with my fingers.
I flinched when I heard a loud horn from outside and ran out of the school.
"I'm coming, I'm coming!!" I walked out and took a last look before getting into the car.
"How do you know this place, Mila?" asked Sofi as she watched my expressions carefully.
"This is where I belong, Sofi." I sighed and looked out of the window and the cool breeze slipped through my hair and kissed my face gently.
"We're here" my uncle said as we parked the car near an old estate. There was a huge metal gate with the name "Cabello" written on the side. Uncle tapped the password in and it opened to let us in.
All of a sudden I felt the atmosphere change.
The breeze stopped.
There was no sound even when the house was filled with relatives.
Sofi held my hand tightly and hid behind me as we walked towards our house with our bags.
"It's okay" I whispered and clutched my bag's strap tight. "Here we go." I gulped and gave my mom reassurance.
We walked into the house and my relatives were already waiting for us inside grandmother's room.
My mother ran into abuela's room crying instantly.
"Mila, I'm scared" sofi tugged onto my sleeves
"Sofi.." I held her hand tightly "go to your room and freshen up! It's gonna be okay! Mom is just tired." I assured her.
