It felt like just then nothing else in the world mattered. The only thing that was important at the moment was that two people were existing together, their hearts beating as one. Even if the feeling wasn't ever spoken or put into words, both of them knew it was there. It was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time, because neither one could imagine living without it. If they ever lost that feeling, they weren't sure they would feel complete anymore.
The stillness of the night had a calming effect over everything, and even MafuMafu's quickly beating heart felt soothed as he stared up at the pitch black sky. The stars that glittered above him were like millions of tiny lights, blinking in and out of existence in a way that made it impossible to count how many there were. Still, he tried to count them anyway. It was a good way to pass the time.
"You've been quiet for a while," his companion, the person he held most dearly to him in the entire world (otherwise known as Soraru), commented suddenly.
"That's because I'm concentrating," MafuMafu replied without tearing his gaze from the sky.
"What are you concentrating on?" Soraru asked, curious.
MafuMafu didn't say anything in response, he was too focused on the task at hand. He was almost to three hundred, all he needed was to count five more stars... MafuMafu let out a startled squeak when he felt something poke his cheek, and he whipped his head around to see what it was out of instinct. Soraru was looking back at him, a barely contained smile on his face.
"Soraru-san, why did you do that?! I was just about to hit three hundred!" MafuMafu whined loudly.
"Three hundred?" Soraru echoed.
"Yeah, three hundred stars!" MafuMafu responded, still sounding distraught.
Soraru gave a short snort of a laugh, the amused smile on his face broadening. "Don't tell me you were actually counting stars just now."
"Of course that's what I was doing! What else would I- Hey, don't laugh at me!" MafuMafu exclaimed.
His voice was even higher-pitched than normal because of how upset he was, and it was both hilarious and adorable at the same time. Soraru didn't mean to laugh, he just really couldn't help it.
"Sorry, sorry, I'll stop. You can go back to what you were doing," Soraru chuckled, managing to stifle his laughter for the most part.
MafuMafu pouted and turned his head so that he could look at the sky once more. "There's no point in doing it now. I'd have to start all over..."
Despite his initial reaction to all this, MafuMafu really didn't mind that Soraru had broken his concentration and made him lose count. He was just glad that Soraru had paid any attention to him in the first place. They had been laying out on the grass for around twenty minutes now, merely looking up at the sky in silence. It had been MafuMafu's idea, since they were visiting a place far away from the city for a kind of "vacation", and he suggested that they go stargazing together. His excuse had been something along the lines of "I've never done it before and I can't think of any other time when I'd get the chance", but honestly he just wanted to do something semi-romantic with Soraru for once. It was all for the selfish reason of wanting to pretend like there was actually something between them, which MafuMafu felt kind of guilty about. He shouldn't be thinking of his best friend this way, it was wrong.
"If you're bored, we can leave you know," Soraru said, bringing MafuMafu out of his reverie.
"Huh? N-No, I'm not bored at all!" MafuMafu stammered quickly in response. I'm actually so happy to just be here with you that I hope we never have to leave, he added mentally, but decided to keep this to himself. "Are you bored, Soraru-san?"
