Chapter 14

A soft muffled ding woke me from my dreamland. I dreamt of Michael. Some of his arms around me planting soft kisses over my skin and others of his pleading eyes begging for my forgiveness. Realization drifted over my sleep-confused senses and disappointment forced my eyes open. The good dreams weren't real but the bad ones were. I  truly felt horrible. What I did was basically as bad as cheating. I slept with one of his best friends the same day that I broke up with him. My stomach turned from guilt.

I reached under my pillow to where my phone rested. There was a text from Calum.

Before I could even read it, it started buzzing with Calum’s number flashing across the screen.

“Hello?” I answered, yawning.

“Hey. Did something happen between you and Michael yesterday?” He asked frantically.

“Um kinda why?” I asked as I propped myself up on my pillow, anxiously waiting for his next words.

“I’m at the hospital right now, I went to pick him up this morning and he was freaking out so I tried to get him to come with me to the hospital but he was getting really aggressive so I called the boys over and we had to hold him down and oh my god it was insane. The doctor’s think he overdosed on cocaine. You’re the only one who could make him this upset.” Calum spurred talking a hundred miles a minute. My heart rate picked up.

“Oh my god! Is he okay?” I asked jumping out of bed. I threw on some grey sweatpants and a tank top.

“So far I think. The doctor won’t let us see him. He was burning up really bad too when we got here.” Calum said. His breathing was fast and he sounded really worried.

“I’m coming right now.” I said before hanging up. My heart pounded loudly in my ears as I brushed my hair and ran down the stairs.

My mom, dad, and brother were sitting in the dining room eating pancakes as I rushed to the door.

“Payton where are you go-” My dad started before I cut him off.

“Michael’s at the hospital. I have to go.” I slipped on a jumper and some black uggs before bursting out the door and running to my car.

As I drove my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. Every emotion ran through me but the worst was pure fear. Cocaine overdose? Don’t people die from that?

My hands shook harder as my lip started to tremble. He can’t die. It will be my fault. I made him upset.

Tears slipped steadily down my cheeks as I prayed to God that he’d be okay. He has to.

I’m sure it was extremely unsafe to be driving in my state of mind.

I had a hard time keeping the wheel straight with my shaky hands and my eyes were blurred with tears. My foot was heavy on the gas as I made my way to the hospital.

I pulled up and basically ran to Calum who was waiting for me at the entrance. I hugged him tightly for a moment. His brotherly love calming my anxiety briefly.

“Where is he?” I asked. Calum lead the way to where Luke and Ashton were waiting.

“We can’t see him yet but he’s just down the hall.” Calum pointed towards where Michael’s room was. There were doctors and nurses rushing in and out every few minutes. I could feel tears threatening to spill over again but I pushed them back, unfortunately not before Ashton saw them. He got up immediately and pulled me into a strong embrace.

“You really love him, don’t you?” He said after a while. He rubbed my back soothingly and I nodded, unable to form any words. A few tears managed to escape onto Ashton’s shirt. I was so scared.
