Chapter 19

I giggled as Michael stuffed another marshmallow into his mouth and attempted to say ‘Chubby Bunny’. I almost choked on my own mouthful of marshmallows. I ran to the kitchen of Michael’s small apartment and spat them out into the garbage, laughing the whole time. Mikey was still going strong.

“Tubby Burny” He said as he shoved his twelfth marshmallow into his cheek. A drip of white goo slid out of the corner of his mouth.

“Eww!” I screamed.

“Cerme give mer a kith.” He said, puckering his gooey lips and extending his arms out to me. I squeaked and ran down the hallway.

Michael closely followed and in no time had me backed into a corner. By now the goo had dripped around his chin and formed bubbles at the corners of his mouth. He pressed me to the wall and puckered his lips even more.

I managed to turn my head just as his sticky white lips touched my cheek.

“EWWW!” I shrieked, pushing him off. He laughed so hard that he had to spit it out into the garbage as well.

“I won!” Michael announced triumphantly. “I fit twelve marshmallows in my mouth.” He wrapped his arms around my waist and lifted my into the air.

“Whatever, you cheated!” I argued. “You couldn’t even say chubby bunny, it just sounded like jibberish.”

“Excuse me? You’re just mad that you could only fit 5 in your mouth.” He teased.

“Ahem, six actually, now let me down so I can wash this off my face.”

He dropped me and I ran to the bathroom.

It took me atleast 5 minutes until I was free of marshmallow goop. I pressed my face into a towel when the doorbell rang.

I walked back into the main room and saw Michael peeping through the curtains.

He cursed under his breath. I stood behind him.

“Who is it?” I asked

Michael turned around slowly with a shocked expression.

“It’s my parents.”

-

Michael’s parents didn’t look impressed when he opened the door. Michael never told me much about his parents other than that they didn’t get along very well.

“Michael, can we come in? It’s important.” His mother asked. He nodded, pushing the door open wider. His mother’s eyes landed on me.

“You must be Vanessa. I’m Laurie and this is my husband Pete.” She said extending a hand.

I stared at her confused. Vanessa? Why would she think that I’m Vanessa?

I looked down and shook my head.

“Um, no. Actually I’m Payton..” I said raising an eyebrow. Her smile faded and her eyes turned icy. She dropped her hand immediately.

“You’re Payton.” She stated, her eyes shooting daggers. It wasn’t a question but I immediately nodded. My eyes connected with Michael trying to gather what he knew about this. He looked away quickly before turning to his parents. His father sent me a look of deep disappointment as he passed me to walk to the dining room table. Michael’s parents sat at the table and Michael followed. I stood by the table uncomfortably.

“Should I go?-” I started.

“No. This involves you.” Michael’s mother interrupted me.

I gulped and shakily sat down beside Michael, across from his parents. My heart was pounding. I absolutely hate confrontations. I’ve never even met these people and they already clearly hate me.

“Michael, we know about your habits.” Pete, his father, stated.

“I beg your pardon?” Michael asked, obviously clueless to what he was being accused of.

“Don’t pretend, Michael. We know about the drugs and we know that she introduced you to them.” Laurie glared at me when she said the word “she”.

Michael fell silent.

“Your friend Vanessa phoned us and told us all about the situation and how worried she was for you. I assumed that she was her, but obviously not.” Laurie stated. Of course Vanessa was behind this as always.

“You, stay away from my son. He doesn’t need some whore coming around to mess up his life even more!” His mother snarled at me.

My mouth fell in shock but I didn’t let it stop me from responding.

“I’m sorry Mrs. Clifford, but I’m confused. I’ve never done drugs a day in my life and I’ve most definitely never encouraged anyone to do drugs.” I said calmly, hoping to convince her.

She looked ready to jump across the table and strangle me until Pete placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Remember who we’re here for, dear.” He said quietly. She took a deep breath and turned back to Michael, but not before giving me one more dirty look.

“Michael, we’re here to help you, we want you to go see a drug and alcohol counsellor and you need to stop seeing this girl. Vanessa wants to help too. Surround yourself with good influences.” Laurie said softly, placing a hand on Michaels.

He looked her in the eyes and ripped his hand out from underneath hers.

“Mum, Vanessa is a fucking liar. I admit that I had some problems but Payton has been trying to help me and she has. I’ve been clean for almost a month now. Vanessa is a jealous cunt that has been trying to break us up. So please, get the fuck out of my apartment before I blow up.” Michael said as he stood up, sending his chair flying backwards behind him.

Laurie stood as well, pulling Pete up with her.

“The drugs are doing this to you! I’ve done research you know! Cocaine makes you aggressive!” Mrs. Clifford yelled.

“No YOU make me aggressive! You can’t just storm back into my life and pretend that you give a shit!” Michael growled.

“Don’t swear at your mother, young man! I raised you better than that.” Pete added in, his face turning a dark shade of red from anger.

Michael started laughing, then looked back up to them with a devilish face. “No you didn’t. You raised me to hate myself almost as much as I hate you. I can’t remember the amount of times that your steel toed boots slammed into me when you drank too much. And you” He turned to his mother. “just continued whatever you were doing, and pretended that you didn’t hear me calling for you, for my mom. I needed you.” Michael’s eyes stayed locked with his mother’s until she looked away.

“How dare you embarrass us like this. You know that isn’t true.” Laurie said coldly, collecting her coat and purse. “Don’t come to us for help when you’re living on the streets.” She said before storming out of the house. Pete still stood there looking at the ground.

“Mikey, you know that I love you and I’m so sorry.” Mr. Clifford tried as he stepped towards Michael with his arms lifted slightly. Michael stepped back.

“I’ve heard that before.” He whispered. Pete miserably closed his eyes, looked at me sadly, almost like a silent apology for witnessing that, and walked out the door without another word.
