Chapter 21
I watched as he inhaled another line of the substance and my heart sank.
I wanted so badly to rip it away from him but I wouldn’t dare. He was high now, and I know what that means; don’t fuck with him.
Sighing, I laid my head back onto the pillow and closed my eyes. All I could feel was disappointment. I wanted to help him so badly.
Suddenly the light was blocked and my eyes fluttered open. Michael’s face hovered only inches above mine. He gently touched my shoulder.
“I hurt you.” He whispered softly. I looked at my shoulder which was now a darker shade of purple than before and I flashed back to Michael grabbing it.
“It was my fault too, I pushed you.” I whispered back, placing my hand over his. Michael shook his head slightly. His eyes moved to my wrist. It had a fresh bruise around the circumference of it.
“Here too,” He sighed. He lifted my shirt slowly until just under my ribs. “And here.” He brushed the reddish purple mark on my right hip. His green eyes returned to mine. I watched as they filled with tears. “I’m sorry,” He whispered and brushed his lips softly over mine. I wanted to accept his apology but I couldn’t ignore how dilated his pupils were.
“You broke your promise.” I said, looking down. I hated seeing him high.
I felt his body shift. “What promise?” He asked cluelessly.
I looked back up, ignoring how glassy his eyes looked. “You promised to stop doing.. that..” I pointed towards the table where the remainder of the drug sat.
He blinked a few times and his expression changed. “But it makes me feel good, don’t you want me to be happy?” He asked, annoyed. I could tell where this was going.
“What time is it?” I asked, trying to avert the conversation.
“Don’t fucking change the subject. You don’t care, am I right? You want me to be miserable so I don’t find someone better than you?” His voice began to rise.
“No, I.. that doesn’t even make sense-” I started.
“If you don’t like me for the way I am then why don’t you go be with Ashton, huh? Because he isn’t a fuck up, right?” He snarled as he stood from the couch.
I sighed, wishing I hadn’t said anything. I glanced at the clock on the stove that was just visible from where I was sitting.
“It’s 4 am, let’s just go back to sleep.” I said as I slowly rubbed my temples. I don’t know how much more I can take of this at this hour, I need proper sleep.
Michael scoffed, “Oh you’d love that, wouldn’t you? You can just go to sleep and dream about Ashton and ignore how your BOYFRIEND needs you, and what about your best friend, huh? Haven’t talked to Kaylee in a while, have you?” He ranted, finger pointing the whole time.
The last one actually hurt. I’ve talked about how much it’s bothered me that I haven’t hung out with Kaylee in a while. I’ve just been so wrapped up in dealing with Michael and besides, she’s been getting friendly with the new German exchange student recently. Plus, it’s not like we don’t talk, we just don’t do it in person, well besides at school, where I've only had two classes this semester so I was rarely there anyways. Michael’s voice ripped me from my thoughts.
“What, got nothing to say? It’s because you know I’m right. You’re selfish, always have been. You don’t have time for your friends, or your family, you only do what YOU want to do. Fucking bitch-”
“Shut up! Jesus Christ! You’re not even making any fucking sense!” I screamed suddenly, catching Michael off guard. “I know what you’re doing Michael. You’re just trying to pick a fight!” I stood abruptly, getting right in his face. “And guess what? I’m not sticking around to listen to your shit! Call me when you want to talk normally but for now, I’m going home.” I pushed past a flabbergasted Michael and snatched my sweatpants from the ground, slipping them on.
“You’re just going to leave?” He growled, pulling on my non-injured arm.
I whipped around. “Yeah, I am. You’re acting ridiculously childish.” I snapped before grabbing my coat and bag and stepping out into the hallway of the apartment building.
“See ya.” I said flippantly as I slammed the door.
-
I sat heavily into the drivers seat of my mini Cooper. I hate to leave Michael in the state that he is in but I just can’t handle him. It reminded me too much of my Dad when he used to drink. It never got bad, he just got extremely annoying. He doesn’t drink anymore but he would just start stupid fights about nothing and it was unbearable. I started the car and turned onto the main road to my house. I sighed when I saw that the gas needed to be filled. Luckily there was a 24-hour 7/11 up ahead.
I pulled into the closest pump and went inside to pay. I could’ve used my debit card at the pump but I had a sudden craving for tropical skittles. Strangely enough there was another person in line before me. I guess it’s normal for people to get gas at nearly 5 in the morning?
Just as I was paying I made eye contact with the other man just as he was leaving the store. As soon as I recognized him I looked down. Talk about awkward. It was Michael’s dad, who hated me. Anger suddenly flared in the pit of my stomach as I remembered what he had done to Michael.
I paid for my gas and skittles quickly. I just wanted to go home and sleep.
My hand fumbled in my pocket for my keys and I got them out just as I opened my car door.
A hand gripped the door and a face appeared on the other side of it.
“Last warning, I need you to stay away from my son.” A gruff voice threatened.
It was hard to see through the dim light but using common sense I knew it was Pete, Michael’s father. I really wasn’t in the mood.
“Thanks for the advice, have a nice night.” I said with a sarcastic sweetness as I attempted to get in my car but Pete’s hand stayed planted firmly on my door. I saw his face soften, and almost hint at a smile.
“Look,” He said. “My wife put me up to this. I don’t care if you stay around my son but she’s pretty set on getting rid of you. All I’m saying is, don’t underestimate her, she’s slightly crazy.”
I tried not to chuckle as I relaxed a bit. “You’ve got that right,” I paused. “Uh, no offense though.” I said carefully, realizing we were still talking about his wife. Pete chuckled a little but still tried to keep a straight face. “Don’t worry about it. Now listen, pretend that I just yelled at you and drive off like you’re mad. Laurie’s in the car over there and apparently I’m supposed to be intimidating you right now.” He said, stepping back slightly. I nodded.
“Now stay away from Michael or you’ll regret it!” Pete half-yelled and winked to show he was acting. I placed a scowl on my face, slammed the car door, and sped off.
-
I got home just before 5 and snuck upstairs. I collapsed into bed and fell asleep almost instantly, not giving myself a chance to even process the confusing 5 minutes that I had just had with Pete.
