Chapter 23
“Who the fuck was that?”
I cursed at myself inwardly but wasn’t going to lie.
“I’m with the guys.” I said through the phone.
“Where are you?” Michael asked, his voice sounding shaky.
“Ashton’s house.” I cringed as I spoke.
“I thought I told you that I didn’t want you being around him.” He growled.
“I know but-” I started.
“I’m coming to get you.” He snarled. I didn’t have time to retaliate because the line went dead.
“Fuck.” I groaned, throwing my phone onto Ashton’s bed. The guys had paused the video game again and were looking over at me curiously.
“Who was that?” Luke asked, raising an eyebrow.
I sighed, “Take a wild guess”
“Your mom?”
“Your dad?”
“Doctor?”
“Pharmacist?”
“Lllama?”
The boys shot one after the other. I raised an eyebrow at Calum.
“A llama? Really?” I giggled at his silliness. “And no you’re all wrong, it was Michael, and guess what? He’s pissed.” I groaned leaning my head back. “He’ll be here any minute to get me.”
“Why don’t you just tell him to fuck off?” Ashton suggested. I shrugged.
“I don’t know. I guess I should, eh?” I chuckled. “Seriously though, he’s got to get over this. I mean he’ll still go to band practice and gigs with you, but I’m not allowed to hang out with you? That’s really not fair.”
The boys made sounds of agreement and I took that time to stare up at the ceiling.
“There’s something else..” I started. Eyes returned to me and I thought of a way to say this. I went for the straightforward approach. “Michael’s using again.”
Their four faces had a matching look of sadness. Nobody asked why or when, because it wasn’t important. What was important was that their friend needed them.
“Maybe if we’d have been there for him..” Luke started, beginning to blame himself.
“Don’t.” I stopped him. “He was the one being difficult, not you guys. All that matters now is that we try to help him.”
“After everything that happened, and he’s going back to this? It just doesn’t make sense.” Calum said, shaking his head.
A loud, impatient knock sounded at the door.
I didn’t have a chance to tell the boys to keep their mouths shut before opening the door. I suppose that would’ve helped.

“Why won’t you stay the fuck away from my girlfriend!” Michael roared, pushing past me and pinning Ashton to the wall. Ashton was about to speak when Michaels fist collided with his jaw. Next a blow to the eye. Then the nose.
Michael took a moment to breathe and Ashton spoke up over the blood gushing from his nose.
“M-Michael, we just want to help you, we know about the drugs.” Ashton coughed out, attempting to spit the blood from his mouth. I froze, realizing the words I was hearing and the situation that would come out of them.
Michael paused. “What the fuck did you just say?” He growled, then suddenly dropped his hold on Ashton. He turned to me. “You told them?! I trusted you, you fucking bitch!” Michael screamed. I could see the fury in his eyes, intensified by the effects of the drugs.
“I wanted to help you.” I choked out, realizing tears were forming.
In an instant something changed in his eyes, like he suddenly felt guilty. He stepped close to me and looked me directly in the eyes. I held my breath.
“I don’t want your fucking help
