Tobias
She's just so beautiful. It's impossible to take my eyes off of her. Every single class I spent just staring at her hair, cheeks, arms, face, eyes, everything. She made a huge impact on me.
I know what you're thinking: "OMG HE HAS A CRUSH" and you are correct. I like Tris. She's a very lovable girl. But then I think of our possibilities together, and it breaks my heart. I don't deserve her. I don't know anything about love; I never knew how it felt to be loved. My whole life has been blood, screams, sobs, and belts. I shudder at the thought. 'No,' I think. 'I have to keep Tris safe. The best thing for her is to stay away from me and my father.'
If my father ever hurt Tris, well, let's just say I'd much rather die than to see her in pain like that.
"Mr. Eaton! That is the 5th time today that you weren't paying attention! Detention after school today." says Mrs. Matthews, my evil Science teacher. She absolutely hates me and has tried to get me expelled more than once.
"Mrs. Matthews, don't give Four detention," says Tris. 'NO!' I scream mentally, praying she'll get the message. 'Let me take my punishment! Be the good girl you are and stay out of it!'
"I dared him to do his best not to pay attention and he was just doing the dare. Sorry, Mrs. Matthews, but I swear it won't happen again," she says, sending me a smile, believing she got away with it. But if there's one thing that Mrs. Matthews hates more than me, it's rebels who try to protect the bad kids.
"Well then, Ms. Prior, I guess you'll both be getting a detention today." says Mrs. Matthews, smiling evilly.
"Yes, ma'am," replies Tris in a hushed tone, but loud enough that Mrs. Matthews heard her.
After school, we both go to the detention room and sit there for 30 minutes. God, Marcus is gonna kill me. I'm up for a bad beating tonight.
We get into the car and I drive her home, while she talks to me about how Mrs. Matthews is a jerk and how she shouldn't even be a teacher and how I didn't deserve that detention. I just answer with nods and "mmhm"s because I'm trying to keep the bile that is rising in my throat, in my throat so I don't throw up all over the car.
We get to her house and she gives me a smile, a quick hug, and goes inside. I notice she hesitates a little at the door but covers it up with a trip. Smart girl. I drive over to my house, dreading what will come in the moments to come.

Tris
I get inside and I stop immediately at the door. My mouth gapes open, but I close it quickly, covering it with a yawn.
My parents are home.
My father, Andrew, walks up to me and says, "How was your first day?"
I resist the urge to say "why do you care" and instead say, "Fine, how was yours, Andrew?"
"Oh, work, business, running, annoying people, not too great."
I start panicking inside and say, "I have homework to do, may I go to my room, Natalie?"
Natalie, my mother, says, "Yes, just come down at 7:30 and make dinner."
"Yes, ma'am."
I walk up the stairs to my room, trying not to scream, to cry, to kick the wall. I hope Four's day is going better than mine. 'Wait!' I think. 'I can ask him! He lives right next door, we can talk through the windows!'
I open my window and throw a random pebble I dragged in at his window. It makes a 'clang' sound, and suddenly he's there. Thankfully, there is a huge tree right next to both of our houses, so I nod towards it, and he smiles and nods back, indicating he got my message: 'Climb the tree.'
I climb onto the closest branch and close the window softly behind me. Then, I climb to the middle and jump into his arms. He yelps in pain and I immediately back up.
"Oh my God, did I hurt you? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to --" I say, but he interrupts me.
"Yea, I'm fine. Just, ah, sore from running today, yeah," he responds between groans.
"Four, what happened. We didn't run today," I tell him seriously, then I think, 'Oh God, please don't tell me your dad abuses you too!'
"Tris," he starts, I won't let him off the subject.
"What happened."
"Tris, seriously, I'm fi --"
"Four, tell me what happened! I can't see you hurting, it hurts me, too!"
"Fine. My dad beat me."
I start sobbing and he looks at me sympathetically.
"Tris, it doesn't hurt that bad. You wouldn't know --"
"Yes, I would know, Four, because my dad beats me, too!" I scream at him through my sobs.
"Oh my God," he says, tears coming into his eyes.
"Four, I'm sorry for yelling at you. It's just that I --" and before I finish my apology, he does something brave that I would never do.
He kissed me.
