Part 16

Tom Westorio can be many things. He can be funny, he can be rude. He can be absolutely caring and very gentlemanlike. But he definitely cannot be moody. No way. Nobody could have ever seen a moody Tom Westorio. He would always be seen chuckling hard at a silly joke or hanging out with his whole lot of friends. He would never sit alone at the parking keeping to himself.

Tom was upset over something. I tried to ask him, but he refused to tell me about it.

"It's nothing" he used to say.

I tried not to mind. But, it's really hard seeing Tom like this. He became unusually quiet. Even at school, he always forced a smile out of his lips whenever he met his friends. He never showed up at the cafeteria and in the evenings his car left the school grounds right after the school bell. So I never really had the chance to talk to him. I asked him what was wrong in texts, but he ignored my texts. He has been this way since the time we fought that forest fire.

He has been absent for school for three days in a row and none of his closest friends even know why.

"Maybe he caught the flu or something" said Amber when I voiced my concern over Tom to her.

"Maybe. But why is he not attending my calls or replying my texts?" I asked her. I was sure something fishy was going around.

"I don't know, Stacey. But he hasn't been talking with his other friends too" Said Amber as we walked to our classes.

"How do you know that?"I asked back.

Till now, I thought Tom was avoiding only me. I had felt a little hurt at the beginning. But then, I realized that he was nothing more than a really good caring person and his not talking to me shouldn't really bother me. We weren't even that close as friends to begin with.

"Tom has been avoiding all calls and texts. He is not even answering to his friend's texts. Cubert said so" said Amber.

"Wait who? Cubert? You mean Cube, the drummer in his band don't you. You know him, Amber?" I asked surprised.

"Well yes, he is my lab partner in bio" she said.

"Oh" I said. "What else did he say?"I asked her.

"Nothing much. Only that Tom seemed bothered about something and he refused to tell even his friends about it" said Amber shrugging.

Suddenly a thought struck me and an imaginary light bulb flickered on the top of my head.

"What if?" I said turning to amber. "What if something is wrong with his powers? Maybe that's why he didn't want to share it with his friends. Nobody knows about his powers. Not even his parents. Nobody except....Sabrina".

"His cousin?" asked Amber.

"Yes. I am gonna go to her house today and find out what's wrong with Tom." I said determined.

"Fret not Stacey dear, all would be fine" said a reassuring Amber.

"I wish" I said sighing. Nothing in life would be fine, if you are cursed.

That evening I walked to Sabrina's house right after school.

I stood on the front door and rang the bell. There was silence for few minutes and a little later the door slightly opened.

"Who is it?" asked a voice from behind the door. Through the gap in the door, I could see that the front room was dark. Nobody had bothered to draw the curtains or turn on the lights.

"Its Stacey Reynolds" I answered hoping she would remember me.

The door opened wide. Sabrina stood wearing a pink shirt and a long dark skirt. There was some kind of sadness in her eyes.

She sighed on seeing me.

"Come on in, Fire girl" she invited me in.

I went in.

"Sit down" she said directing me to a sofa in the living room. "Would you like some coffee or coke?" she offered.

"Where is Tom?" I asked her, making the purpose of my arrival clear to her.

Her eyes opened wide and returned to their normal gaze. She sighed again.

"Come and see for yourself" she said in a sad tone.
