Part 18

I rolled and tossed in my bed. The digital clock in my room displayed 12:00 in bright red LED.I just couldn't fall into sleep. I kept thinking about Tom. His room was so cold. How would he possibly sleep in that room, I wondered. My thoughts gradually shifted to the different memories I had of Tom during my childhood.

There was a memory of an incident during the time when I was 12.It was the time when the shopping mall in our town was officially opened. Amber's brothers kept an ice cream parlour at the mall. Amber and I used to hang out there during our free time.

One day, there was a customer who created a little scene. She was a girl who was in her late teens. She ordered a double Choco layered ice cream and then after a few seconds changed her order to a Strawberry Alaskan sundae. Then again, she changed her order for a Pista smoothie. I was the one taking her order and I naturally grew impatient. Tom was there in the scene too. He was next in the line and he grew impatient too.

But the girl just wouldn't make up her mind. I lost my temper and shouted at her.

The girl gave me a strange look and glared at me. I glared back. She muttered something unintelligible under her nose and walked out of the parlour.

This was a strange memory that I don't ponder over often. But that girl. There was a cunning look in her eyes. Her deathly glare and sly smile seemed creepy enough to give me a nightmare.

I hardly slept. Early next morning I woke up showered and got ready for school. I suddenly had that feeling in my gut that something was wrong. I decided to walk over to Sabrina's house to check if everything was alright. He froze his phone else I could have called him.

As I neared Sabrina's house, my fears somehow worsened. I went up to the front door and saw that the door handle had ice on it.

Oh oh this doesn't seem right.

I rang the bell hoping that Sabrina would come open the door. There was no answer. I put my hand on the door handle and heated it up. The ice melted slowly. I put my shoulder against the door and pushed it hard. There was some crackling of ice from inside. Soon the door opened. I went inside. The living room was full of ice. The whole house looked like a tiny ice house. Each and everything was frozen. I instantly made for Sabrina's bedroom. She lay frozen on the bed. I immediately held her hands and passed on some heat to her. I searched for a pulse and found a very faint one. I took out my phone and rang out for an ambulance.

Sabrina had remained in the cold for too long. She would be having hypothermia now.

I rushed upstairs to check on Tom. Inside his room he lay softly asleep in his bed. I went near him and gently touched his cheek. He woke up startled. He saw the sad and shocked expression in my face and got out of bed. Having realized that he froze the whole house in his sleep, he rushed to Sabrina's bedroom. I followed him.

"Oh dear! What have I done" he exclaimed falling on his knees.

He turned and looked at me.

"I killed her, didn't I?" he asked in a broken voice.

I couldn't answer him. I was slightly shaken myself.

Tom covered his face with his hands and bend down so that his head was touching the floor. He then, got up and went to the drawers. He opened a drawer and took out a little purse. He threw the purse towards me and I caught it.

"There is money in that" he said. "Get the doctors". He got up and grabbed a jacket and walked out.

"Tom, Wait!" I shouted running behind him. But he was way too fast for me and left the house.
