Part 17

Sabrina directed me to the bedroom upstairs. The door was closed. She knocked at the door twice. No answer. We looked at each other.

Sabrina knocked again.

"Tom, Open the door. Stacey's here" said Sabrina.

At the mention of my name, I could sense some motion inside the room.

The door opened slightly. Cold air blew in through the door. Tom stood there, his frame half hidden by the door.

"Tom? What happened? Why aren't you coming to school?" I asked. His room was so dimly lit that I could not see him properly.

"Jeez, don't you ever turn on your lights?" I asked as I stepped in and flipped the light switch.

I slipped and luckily Tom's cold arms caught me before I could fall.

"Careful" he said helping me stand straight. I am hearing his voice after a long time now.

I looked down on the floor and saw what made me slip.

The floor was ice.

Not just the floor. The walls, the table, everything was covered in ice.

I gasped and clapped my hands over my mouth.

Tom walked back into his room and sat down on his bed.

"Why are you here, Stacey?"He asked not looking at my face.

"Tom what happened?" I asked looking in awe at the crystal clear ice.

"Can't you see? I turned into an ice monster" he said grimly.

I walked into his room careful not to slip on the ice again.

"I'll go down and get some hot coffee" said Sabrina as she left the door.

I stood opposite to him. I brought a little fire to my hands and melted the place where I was standing just so that I wouldn't slip again.

I looked at his solemn face which stayed focused on the ground. He wore a grey t shirt and dark blue jeans and leather gloves in his hands. His brown hair was ruffled and his blue eyes were bloodshot.

"Let me guess? You lost your control over your powers didn't you?" I asked.

Tom nodded slightly.

"Something went wrong. My powers got stronger and I couldn't control them again." He explained.

"You learned to control it before. You'll learn to control it again." I said trying to cheer him up.

Tom only nodded his head in disagreement.

"You don't understand Stacey. Water in Liquid form is easier to manipulate. But ice is different. I can't control it. Look" he said removing his gloves. He stood up and walked over to the table. He picked up a pen from the pen stand. Seconds after the pen came into contact with his bare hands, it turned into ice.

"Now do you understand why I am skipping school?" He asked looking at me.

"Try reversing the effect" I suggested.

"I tried. It's no use. I can't defrost them." He said sadly returning to sit on his bed.

"Relax Tom. You'll figure out a way sooner or later" I said.

Tom smiled and let out a small laugh.

"What's so funny?" I demanded.

"Water is not like fire Stacey. It's way too dangerous." He said with a smile playing in his lips.

I didn't understand. Water is more dangerous than fire?

"Coffee is ready." Sabrina called out from downstairs.

"Come on, let's go down" I said to Tom.

Tom hesitated. Anyways he got up and followed me to the door. As soon as his feet stepped on the carpet outside his room, it turned to ice.

Tom quickly backed into his room.

"I'll stay here. You go downstairs." He said looking at me.

I nodded understanding.

"I'll be around. I'll drop by every evening to check on you." I said with a serious face.

"Thanks. I'll be fine I guess" he shrugged with an expressionless face.

I nodded and turned to leave for downstairs.

"Stacey?" called Tom softly.

"Yes?" I asked turning back.

"Nothing. I just wanted to say that I am glad that you found your prince charming" He said smiling.

Before I could reply anything, he backed in and closed the door.

"His curse has become worse. It might devour him anytime soon" said a worried Sabrina to me.

I sipped the coffee that she had made for me.

"How did you know that it has worsened?" I asked her.

"I can sense it." She said simply.

Sabrina can sense curses becoming worse?

"He never did attempt to search for his true love" I said sadly.

"Yeah" chimed in Sabrina."He never listened to me on that account."

I finished my coffee.

"I should be leaving now" I said getting up from the couch. It was half past 7:00.

"Okay" said Sabrina and walked me to the door. She kept yawning uncontrollably.

"I am so tired" she said in between her yawns. "I am going to get a good night's sleep"

"Good night Sabrina" I said as I stepped out of the house.

"Good night" she said as she closed the door.
