The quiet little village of Storybrooke, Maine, was once rumored that the town used to be filled with all kinds of supernatural creatures. Witches, werewolves, vampires, you name it. The people who were killed all those years ago when humans started to become scared- terrified that they were going to be the next victim to a monster. No one knew what to expect, so the town mayor decided to kill and discard of the supernatural beings. Those that weren't captured and killed, went into hiding. Witchcraft became illegal, punishable by a public hanging. Werewolves would be killed by a weapon made of silver, and vampires would be killed by a stake to the heart. Some were killed on sight, others were tortured before their death. The humans were tired of being afraid, so they fought back.
Killian watched as the fires broke out. The people running freely with torches and pitchforks, ready to attack. Screams from men, women, and children were heard. Howls of the wolves who had escaped were in the distance. Killian moved the boulder back to the entrance of the cave. His love, Milah, was captured. No doubt killed. They were both vampires, forced to endure the pain and suffering all for the humans' safety. He stood back with tears in his eyes, his heart growing dark and cold. He had managed to flee the village, but not with his beloved. He reached down into his satchel and took out her jewelry box. A heart was carved into the wood of the lid. Beautiful designs on the entire box. It had been a birthday gift from him to her, but she would never get to see it. Never would she know the patience he put into making the box. His heart- once filled with love and compassion, now would be nothing but vengeance and anger until he got his revenge on the humans.
Emma closed the book and put it back in her bag. She had found the book in the back of the Storybrooke Public Library. Belle, the librarian, had told her that it was one of her favorite stories. It was about myths of supernatural creatures, taking place in the 1400's. The author had visited Storybrooke and wrote the book, basing it in the town. Emma and her family were still new in town. Her parents, Mary Margaret and David Nolan had moved from Portland, Oregon to Storybrooke with their daughter a few months back. They wanted Emma to be around a small amount of people. Where everyone knew everyone. The town was quiet, and hardly anyone ever came to visit, so it was safe. Emma liked her life here. She had friends, a small job as a waitress at Granny's Diner, and a lovely home. Her life was perfect.
On her way back to her parent's loft, she passed by Mr. Gold's Pawn Shop. She had passed by the shop everyday before and after work, but had never gone into the store. Emma glanced down to her watch. Twenty minutes until curfew. Plenty of time to look at the trinkets he had in there.
The little bell above the door jingled as she stepped in. Many things caught her attention as she entered. There was a lawn windmill in the corner, two creepy puppets sitting on one of the display shelves, even an old spinning wheel that looked like the one in the Disney movie Sleeping Beauty. But, what really caught her attention was a dark oak wood jewelry box on the counter. What really surprised her was that there was a heart on the top of the lid, and her thoughts drew back to her book. Could this be the jewelry box that inspired the book?
"Can I help you?" An accented voice asked from behind her. Emma jumped and turned around. "You are Emma, right?"
"Yeah," she said hesitantly. "I haven't been able to stop by since moving to town, and I finally had the chance."
"Interesting." She could hear the smirk in his voice as he walked around the counter. "See anything you like?"
"Just looking around actually, but yeah. The jewelry box looks cool. Is it the one that was in this book?" She grabbed it from her bag and Mr. Gold squinted at it.
