Chapter 10

Picture-Windpaw

Her eyes are actually blue

As Dawnpaw left the den Windpaw and Hazelpaw looked at her expectantly. Well Hazelpaw asked when she didn't speak. She was thanking me for saving Frogleap and also wanted Windpaw to know that she was sorry for being so stern she explained. When she finished she thought she saw a hint of jealousy in Hazelpaws eyes but it disappeared almost instantly. Looks like the patrol is back Windpaw remarked. Dawnpaw glanced over and realized Windpaw was right. The patrol had emerged and and was carrying two limp bodies. She felt a pang of sorrow as she looked at the two kits. Did you find Flamekit Marshstar asked. Badgerclaw shook his head sadly and a shadow of worry passed over Marshstars face. As Badgerclaw and Dewfall set the kits down Marshstar flicked her tail as she ordered all the senior warriors, medicine cat, and her deputy to come to her den. She padded over to the two kits as Badgerclaw and Dewfall walked off. One of the kits was a pale gray tabby she-kit while the other was a black and brown tom. She saw Hazelpaw had padded over with her while Windpaw talked to her mentor Larkflight. Amberleaf walked over looking concerned. It's sad isn't it Amberleaf murmured to them. Dawnpaw nodded and Windpaw padded over. She waved her tail in greeting to Windpaw and turned to Amberleaf. What do you think is going to happen now she asked, tilting her head. We will just have to explain to Greenstar and hope he listens Amberleaf replied. She nodded and turned to talk to Windpaw and Hazelpaw for what seemed like several heartbeats before Marshstar emerged from hr den along with everybody else that had been there. She watched as Marshstar stood in the center of the clan and let out a yowl for everybody to gather. As she padded over she looked up and saw night had blanketed the sky. When everybody had gathered Marshstar started speaking, I will have a team of warriors go out and bury the two kits and want two warriors on watch at the elm watch tonight Marshstar ordered. I also want one last patrol to go out and check for Flamekit she finished. Marshstar waved her tail and the meeting broke up. She saw Beechleaf walk forward and start organizing patrols. Both of you should go to sleep it must have been a long day for you Amberleaf meowed. Dawnpaw nodded in agreement, her limbs aching in exhaustion. She padded to the den Hazelpaw and Windpaw following her. When she reached her nest she plopped down in it and quickly fell asleep.

Dawnpaw wake up somebody meowed. She grumbled and turned over. Greenstar is here the cat said urgently and she realized it was Hazelpaw. She shot up, now wide awake. He is she mewed. Yes follow me Hazelpaw said, dissapearing out of the den. She scrambled out of the den. Dawn light shone over the camp and a faint scent of rain hung in the air and Greenstar stood in the middle with his deputy Meadowpelt along with some other warriors and as she looked more closely she realized Ivypaw and Poppypaw were there. She rushed over to where Windpaw and Hazelpaw. What's going on she whispered. Windpaw pointed to where the Springclan patrol was and she quickly quieted when she saw Marshstar walking forward. She dipped her head respectfully and looked up. What is it you have come for she asked calmly. As you may know three of our kits went missing and and the scents led into your territory she explained, looking at her with a challenge in his eyes. She saw Marshstar take a deep breath before she started speaking, Yes we did find two of your kits but both of them were killed- she was cut off by an outraged yowl from a warrior from the patrol. Greenstar shot the warrior a warning glance before meowing you may go on. As I was saying both of them were killed by one of our cat but I had nothing to do with that and we will punish the cat when we find out who it is we also buried the two and Flamekit went missing and we haven't been able to find her she finished. She saw the Springclan patrol shifting restlessly their eyes shining with anger. She saw Meadowpelt whispered something to Greenstar. May we see the place where the kits were killed Greenstar asked. Marshstar nodded and beckoned to Badgerclaw, Birdsong, Whitestripe, and Mudwhisker. She bounded forward can I come she asked Badgerclaw. Badgerclaw padded up and talked with Marshstar. Marshstar thought for a second and then nodded. She felt excitement tingle in her paws and leaped up, swiping at a leaf. She saw some cats cast her puzzled glances and she shuffled her paws in embarrassment. She jumped as she felt a tap on her shoulder and saw Hazelpaw. I'm coming too she said excitedly. That's great she responded cheerfully. She saw the cats starting to move and quickly padded forward falling into step beside her mentor. As they walked to the spot she felt the tension in the air and began to feel nervous. When they reached the spot she saw Greenstar begin to sniff the air suspiciously. I don't smell any fox scent here he growled. As Dawnpaw sniffed the air she realized he was right but the area was covered with blood and Swampclan scent andthe Swampclan scent smelled strangely familiar but she couldn't figure out why. She saw the patrol tense, we have no idea who did this Mudwhisker protested. It was obviously one of you're cats \and wwhat cat alone would have a deep enough grudge to kill these kits Greenstar pointed out. She saw the patrol was at a loss for what to say. We don't know Whitestripe managed to say. Liars Poppypaw yowled Murders another cat hissed. She saw most of the Springclan cats getting ready to spring and bristled, unsheathing her claws. Stop Ivypaw yowled, stepping forward. She blinked in astonishment at her as all the other cats turned, wearing similar expressions. What is it Greenstar demanded, looking annoyed. We shouldn't waste our time with them we can always come back later Ivypaw said coldly. Greenstar tilted his head for a few heartbeats in thought and then started speaking. "Ivypaws right we shouldn't waste our time with them" Greenstar spat. We will be back mark my words Greenstar snarled before padding to Springclans territory. Ivypaw followed behind the patrol and as Ivypaw left she thought she saw a flash of guilt and uncertainty in her eyes but also strangely anger and sadness.
