CHAPTER FORTY
“Roxy, come down here for a second.” My dad called up the stairs to me. I sighed and shut my laptop. I stood up from my bed and left my room. I walked down the stairs and pulled the sleeves of my jumper over my hands.
“What’s up?” I leant against the doorframe and folded my arms across my chest.
“Sit down,” he pointed to the chair opposite him and my mum. I sighed and walked over to the table. I sat down and folded my arms across the table. “We need to have a chat about something.”
I nodded and glanced between my mum and dad. “What about?” It’s not often that my parents call me down to talk about something. It was only when I did something really bad at school.
“About what’s happening when you go to University. We want to know what your plans are. We don't know what's happening next month."
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. I thought they knew what I was planning on doing. Maybe this is what my dad was talking about last night. "I'm going to the one here with Jessie." I didn't really know what else to tell them. I plan on going to the local University. What else do they need to know?
"Yeah we know that you're going there. Where are you going to live? Are you getting a job while you're there? If you're living here we need to discuss your contribution to the house since you're in Uni and are eighteen." Clearly he and my mum had been talking about this when I wasn't here.
"I was planning on living here. Then maybe think about moving out next year with Jessie and Jade." I know I said I'd kill them if I was living with them, but we still want to live together. I think it'll be such fun. "And I've applied for a job in the students union. So I'll probably work there in between lectures." Working in the students union is probably the most practical option for me.
"What about Mark?" My mum asked, folding her arms on the table.
"What about him?" I don't see how Lewis fits into this. He isn't really involved in my Uni life.
"Do you not want to move in with him? I would've thought you would have spoken about moving in with him instead of Jessie and Jade. Or am I jumping the gun here?"
I could see my dad was thinking the exact same thing. "We've talked about it. But it won't happen for a while." I really don't know how long it'll be until I move in with him. I'm sure I'll know when the right time comes. But I can imagine myself living with him.
"If you get a job we expect some contribution from you for bills and things. Since you could afford to live away from home if you wanted to, we're expecting around ten pound a week." My dad looked at my mum for confirmation. My mum nodded, agree with him. I'm just glad they stopped talking about Lewis.
"That's fine," ten pound a week really isn't that much.
"Well were glad you're staying at home. At least for this year. I don't think I could cope with one of you flying the nest for the first time." My dad said over dramatically. I rolled my eyes and laughed at him.
"How could I leave the free food and heating? Well basically free after I start paying ten pound."
They laughed and my dad shook his head slightly. "What're you doing today?" He stood up and walked over to the kettle to make a cup of tea.
