CHAPTER FOUR
"You decided to turn up then," Mr Hartley said with a smirk.
"Shush," I walked over to a desk and sat down.
"Is someone in a bad mood today?" He teased as I rested my head against my fist.
"Why would I? It's not like I have a reason to be in a bad mood. Most people would kill to be in my position. Everyone wants to be sitting in detention at lunchtime with the least annoying person ever. I'm in a fantastic mood," I said sarcastically. He laughed and I heard his chair squeak as he stood up.
"I know, not everyone can he as lucky as you."
"And not everyone understands sarcasm," I mumbled to myself. I saw him stop at my desk from the corner of my eye.
"I want you to try these questions." He said putting a page on my desk. I looked down at the page and sighed. "What?" he questioned my sigh.
"I can't do logarithms."
He walked around the table and sat down beside me. "Are you going to pay attention or am I just going to be wasting my time?" He asked taking a pen from his pocket. I slowly turned around slightly so I could see what he was doing.
"I'll listen but you still might be wasting your time if I don't understand it." I told him honestly. He smiled and started writing something down.
"Okay, you're going to have to remember the rules. They are similar to the rules of indices," he explained while writing. "Apart from these there is only one thing you need to remember about logarithms."
I nodded actually paying attention to what he was doing.
*
"See you can do maths if you try." He said as I finished one of the questions.
"Yeah, if someone is there to help me. But funny enough I don't think that's going to happen in the exam." I sighed and sat back in my chair stretching. He laughed and stood up.
"You'll be fine when it comes to the exam." He said pushing the page towards me. "If you need help you should just ask me." He walked over to his computer. I scoffed and folded my arms across my chest. "Yeah I know that's not what you want to do. But would you rather ask me a question and spend half an hour with me, or don't ask questions and not get the grades you need to go to University?"
"Do I have to answer that?"
He shook his head, knowing my answer would be the latter and lifted his jacket. "Anyway, have you had lunch yet?" He said pulling on his suit jacket.
"Not yet," I answered putting the sheet in my pocket. He nodded and grabbed his keys.
"Well I'm going to the canteen. Are you coming?" He offered with a smile. I nodded and stood up. "So are you going to the detention on Friday?"
