Deadly Curiosity
I was walking home late one summer's night,
when I noticed a smell that wasn't quite right.
I sniffed the bitter atmosphere once more
and zoned in on a peculiar odor that bore
a very strange metallic sort of scent.
I should have gone home but instead I went
following the scent in my effort to explore,
I had no way of knowing just what was in store.
My instincts told me that I should never dally,
the last thing I expected was to end up in an alley.
There I set my sights on a freakishly tall man
but what was more ghastly? The bloody knife in his hand!
It appeared as if he'd dismembered a body,
I muffled my grasp but he evidently saw me.
I turned and hightailed it all the way home,
stubbing my toe on my neighbor's yard Gnome.
"I'm safe now." I told myself. "I should call the 911." I said.
I dashed to my house phone, and heard the line go dead.
I raced back to check the locks on the front of my door,
That's when I heard a sound that chilled me to the core.
In the still of the night I heard this clicking,
I couldn't help but wonder was he actually picking,
away at the lock, upon the front of my door?
"Is someone there?" I tried to implore.
My answer came as the door creaked open...
He knew where I was, I shouldn't have spoken.
I ran to the kitchen in search for a knife
preparing myself for the fight of my life.
I was like a character from some urban lore,
confronted by the demon that came through my door.
He chased me to the kitchen, his face hidden by a mask
I tried not to be more frightened as I focused on my task.
He advanced on me with a malicious intent to kill,
How could this be happening? It felt too surreal.
I panicked; dropping my knife, but grabbed a pan.
Flinging it at his face, I brushed past him and ran.
Out the kitchen, up the stairs, and to my room,
My heart was pounding in my chest ba boom ba boom.
Ascending the stairs I heard him stalking,
All this because I couldn't keep walking!
I decided I couldn't wait here forever,
I had to do something I had to be clever.
Looking around I found an old wooden bat
then I crept next to the door, bent down, and sat...
As he entered the room I went for his knee,
the house was still dark, so I knew he couldn't see.
I gave him a hard whack over the head
he cried out and fell forward onto my bed.
This was my chance, I broke into a sprint.
I descended the stairs two at a time as I went.
Past the den, past the kitchen, I was almost there;
my fingers were on the knob when a hand gripped my hair.
He yanked it so hard I let out a loud shriek
I wanted to live, but my future looked bleak.
I used my long nails to claw out his eyes,
but it did little to help due to his masked disguise.
He raised his knife in an attempt to stab me,
But little did he know I would not go quietly.
I grabbed at the hand that held that knife,
the tool he would use to try and steal my life.
He was stronger than me so I couldn't use force
I did however, manage to throw his knife off course.
Missing my chest, the blade slid down my arm,
the pain registered in my mind with cold alarm.
But the blade would not be denied at any rate,
it was ultimately exhaustion that sealed my fate.
Though I fought with everything I had,
the knife pierced my chest it was really quite sad.
I could feel my life force slipping away,
I knew I'd never see the light of another day.
All of a sudden my body was flung back
and my vision abruptly faded to black.
The next thing I knew I was in my bed
Glancing at the alarm clock that read
7 am. It was morning? And I'm not dead!
"Must have been some weird dream." Is all that I said.
