Sandstorm

He whittled

down a riddle

to the middle

of the meaning

and pondered

as he wandered

way out yonder

somewhere leaning

The present stars

were pleasant

looking on

the crescent moon

as he thought

in that spot

on a hot night

one June

There he heard

a single word

as a bird

brought its song

and then he carried

an answer buried

being ferried

far beyond

Into the bosom

of the boson

he confided

secrets true

about a terror

and a torment

in the sands

and a mummy's tomb

For death it seems

though serene

may yet return

to this earth

A creature despised

again to rise

and bring hell

with its curse

What could it mean

when winds moan

and men's sins are shown

in sand and fear?

Why do all cower

in that hour

when the monster

glowers near?

He took his torch and fire

and forged ahead

yet never found rest

on any bed

Its torment remained

with shivers beside

pondering how

he escaped alive

Sandstorm awake

to take us in the night!

so we can be free

from the mummy's sight
