Chapter Nine

The Application of Acoustics in Ultrasounds

The warmth and inviting atmosphere she felt inside Papyrus was a welcomed experience for Sophie. She tried to concentrate on her writing but it was being harder than usual, nevertheless, she pushed herself to do it, headphones on her ears (she stole Aaron’s aged mp3) and decided to not give up until she was completely submersed in her own words, thirsting for the sweet numbness that it could bring her.

The blue-eyed girl checked her watch – Charlotte was late. That was highly unusual. Looking in front, she finally noticed one of the employees of the coffee-shop trying to talk to her.

“Sorry, were you talking to me?” she asked, removing the headphones.

The other girl giggled and answered, “Yes. I was asking you if you needed something else.”

“I’m fine, thanks.” Sophie smiled back and returned her attention to her notebook.

“Are you looking for a job?” the nice waitress asked. Sophie looked at her in surprise but before she could say anything, the girl pointed to some of the papers Sophie had lying on the table. “I noticed that you carried your C.Vs around with you for the last weeks or so.”

Of course. Duh.

“Oh, yes, right, actually I am.”

“Well, we’re kinda short on staff right now, if you’re interested-“

“Really?” The excitement was hard to contain, it was the first good news she had received for ages.

“Yes.” The girl laughed. “I can talk to the manager for you, if you want me to.”

“That would be awesome! Thank you so much!”

“Cool.” The girl laughed, taking one of Sophie’s C.Vs from the table. “I’ll give him one of these.”

“So, would I be doing part-time? I mean, you know, if I got called back.”

“Well, we only really need people to work on the weekends, full time on Saturdays and Sundays.”

Sophie’s smile quickly faded. “Oh.”

“No good for you?” The waitress also looked disappointed, which was incredibly nice of her.

“Only two days a week is too little for me, I need a five or six day thing, for the payment you know…”

That didn’t seem to faze the young employee, though. “Well, just think about it and tell me later, ok? I’ll talk about you to the boss anyway.”

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome, Sophie.”

Sophie’s eyes widened. “Do we … know each other?”

“We go to the same school. I’m Jennifer Jameson, but everyone calls me J.J.”

Sophie stared at the girl with more attention. Now that she thought about it, she did recognize Jennifer’s beautiful dark skin, her big black eyes, her short and edgy black hair and even her nose piercing and the Brittish accent that Sophie had only heard at a distance. She just wasn’t used to seeing her in a uniform and with her hair tightly pushed back into a small ponytail.

Jennifer was one of the most fashionable and popular girls at her school. They had never spoken to each other before, Sophie couldn’t even tell how she knew her name. Jennifer was always surrounded by lots of people, it had never even crossed her mind to try and talk to her.
