Life with two people that I love profoundly is actually working out pretty well. Adam and I still have a healthy relationship while Dougie and I are still friends and hang out with each other while Adam isn’t at home. Of course, there’s no flirting going on between both of us but… I still can’t deny that there is still a spark between us that still needs to be ignited from the other side.
But there was this one day where it kind of changed the whole “friendship” thing between Dougie and I. Adam was out buying groceries because both Dougie and I were too lazy to go out the day before and buy them. Being the idiots that we were, Dougie and I were watching the food network and we both became hungry.
“Want some popcorn?” I asked.
“Sure,” he replied.
I stood up from the couch and found the popcorn in one of the drawers and took the plastic off of it – don’t want it to set on fire. I put it in the microwave and set it to two and a half minutes. Following that, I went back to the living room and laid my forearms on the back of the couch as I watched the T.V. My phone buzzed and I looked down to pick it up to find that it wasn’t there. Immediately, I turned my head to look at Dougie.
“Give me my phone,” I demanded.
He looked at me with a smirk. “What phone?”
“My damn phone that is my second life,” I replied.
“Your second life, really? Olivia, you need to read a book once in a while,” he suggested.
I held out my hand. “Give me my phone, that text could a life or death situation.”
Dougie looked at the screen of my phone and shuddered. “It’s just Adam nothing to fear about,” he assured me.
I rolled my eyes and continued to plead for Dougie to give me back my phone. He held up at finger at me. “Stop,” he commanded. “How about we make a deal… I give you your phone back while you do something for me.”
“I’m already making you popcorn, what else would you like?” I questioned.
He turned his attention back to the television and whispered, “A kiss.”
At this point, I wanted my phone back and I didn’t second–guess my decision to do something you should never do. Kiss your ex–boyfriend while you’re dating another man. I walked behind Dougie and brought both of my hands under his chin and raised his head up and pressed my lips against his. I knew after I pressed my lips to his, I lingered them there for a moment too long. I pulled my lips away from his and Dougie held up my phone; I snatched it from his fingers before he changed his mind.
I walked back to the microwave where the popcorn had finished popping. “That better not make anything awkward between us,” I told him.
“Of course not,” assured Dougie.
I took the popcorn out of the microwave, opened the bag and poured the popcorn into separate bowls. I carried the bowls back to the couch and handed one of Dougie while I sat down with the other bowl in my hand.
“Thanks,” he said as he began to dig into his bowl.
Dougie finished his popcorn quicker than I could ever finish a bowl of popcorn. He rose from the couch and went to the kitchen and set his bowl down. “I’m going out for the rest of the day,” Dougie spoke from the kitchen.
“Where are you going?”
“Just going out with some of my friends,” he told me.
“We have to play the Lightning in a couple days. Don’t get too crazy,” I reminded him.
“I promise,” he sarcastically said.
He put on his jacket, his shoes and left the door. And for the first time in a long time, a familiar sense of loneliness came back to my body.
And I hated it.
For months, there’s been days upon days where I’ve felt like there was nothing there, even if I was in a giant crowd of people. None of them were Dougie and none of them were the person that I loved. The person that I love. Sometimes I don’t even think that Adam and I should be together, there’s more confusion and more regret then there ever was before.
I seriously don’t know what to think of right now. Life is confusing me immensely. I just think I should end my relationship with Adam soon.
Just then, Adam walked into the door carrying grocery bags. He brought them into the kitchen and asked me to help him with the groceries. I stood up from the kitchen and through the whole time that I helped him with the groceries my mind was stuck on Dougie and the future life that we could have together. But I shook the feeling off.
Adam came up to me and wrapped his arms around my waist and placed his chin on my shoulder. “I want to take you out later,” he proposed, “what do you think about that?”
“Sure,” I agreed.
Adam loosened his grip around my waist. “Are you okay?” he inquired.
“I’m fine, why do you ask?”
He shrugged his shoulders. “You just seem a little out of it today.”
“I guess it’s just being part of the Bruins staff, balancing a social life, having my education on the line getting shoved into my face is starting to catch up to me,” I ranted.
“Then do you just want to stay home and watch movies, just you and me?” he asked.
I smiled at him. “I’d like that.”
“Shall we start right now then?”
“Let’s go,” I said dragging Adam over to the couch to begin watching our first movie.
