It was a regular Saturday day. I had finished all the laundry in the apartment by three, I did some financial work at the arena without my uncle for the first time, and I managed to clean the house–although I knew it would become messy again in a couple days.
Adam would be travelling along the west coast for the next couple days playing against the California teams and the Coyotes. So it would only be Dougie and I for the next little while. Dougie was continually making progress with his memory every day. It got to the point where I didn’t even think Dougie had forgotten anything.
The only time I remembered Dougie had forgotten parts of his life are when Adam would kiss me on the forehead and Dougie would give us a questioning look. Of course he didn’t remember about Adam and I, I hadn’t gotten to that part in my mini-story. That is why I didn’t want to tell Dougie about the rest of the story because of the burden I didn’t only bestow on me, but also on him.
“You can never go back to the beginning,” Dougie had told me almost a month ago. He was right if anything, he was completely right. I can’t undo what I did. I can’t rebuild my beginning; I have to work with your middle until I reach my end. Part of my end includes me telling Dougie everything that happened between each other. I genuinely mean “everything”. No holding back.
There was a knock on the door, I approached the door and opened it. Dougie stood there with a bunch of flowers in his hand and a smile on his face.
“Did you forget your key in here, Dougie?” I questioned. He smiled at me and handed the bunch of flowers to me. I smiled at him and grasped at the flowers. “What are these for?”
“Since I have forgotten our first date, I have decided to take you on another one,” he told me.
I raised my eyebrows. “You’re taking me on another date?” I inquired.
He nodded. “Of course I am. Where did we go on our first date again?”
“Subway,” I replied.
“Oh,” he said, “that’s a little bit less glamorous than what I had expected.”
“The funny thing is that you suggested we go to Subway too.”
Dougie laughed, I turned around and walked towards the kitchen. I grabbed a vase from the cabinet over the kitchen sink and filled it to the brim with water. I took the flowers from out of the plastic and into the water-filled vase.
I looked up from the vase and looked at Dougie; he was now standing inside our apartment. “So we’ll be just going to Subway?” I questioned.
Dougie shrugged his shoulders. “Unless you would like to do something else,” he proposed.
I grabbed my phone from the kitchen counter and turned it on. “It’s one in the afternoon, what else would we do?”
Dougie shrugged again. “I have no clue; you can decide what else we can do,” he told me.
“How about we wing-it after Subway?”
Dougie grinned. “Sounds good.”
-----
“Try it,” encouraged Dougie while he stuck his sandwich in my face. “Try it; it’s better than your lame sandwich.” He looked at my sandwiched and frowned.
“Are you hoping to go on another date after this?” I inquired. “Because if you are, get that damn thing out of my face.”
Dougie smiled and pulled his sandwich back towards him. “I just supposed I got another one chance after this one.”
I tilted my head at him with a smile still gracing my face. “Don’t be so sure about things, Dougie. I might break it up between us.”
Dougie raised his eyebrow. “You want to break it up between us?” he questioned looking hurt. “But I thought we had something special going on here.”
“We have something special,” I assured him after I took another bite of my sub. “But your sandwich and I don’t.”
Dougie shook his head and took another bite of his jam-packed sub. “Maybe your taste buds shouldn’t just not suck so bad,” he snapped in a playful way.
I stared at Dougie while he looked back at me. He bit at his sandwich; a cucumber fell against his chin. I laughed at him. When I was with Dougie, everything seemed to be natural, he’s a sloppy eater and I feel like I’m back with my family. I feel like I’m at ease with my family.
Dougie eat his cucumber and nodded toward me. “Your phone buzzed,” he said.
My phone sat face down on the table, right beside myself. I picked it up and saw my text message notification. Unlocking my phone, the screen turned to my text message page. I received my new message from Adam–not too surprising actually; he assured me he would be in contact with me while he was out at the west coast.
Pssssst… Olivia… psssssst.
I raised my eyebrow and replied. Minutes later, Adam replied.
Olivia, I have a secret to tell you.
Yes…
Again, Adam’s texts took a long time to get back to me.
I heard you and Dougie are out eating… alone. Want to tell me about it?
What was Adam thinking I was doing? Now that he’s at the west coast, I’ll be cheating on him? He is so delusional.
It’s nothing, Adam. (Of course I knew that was a lie, there was something going on here). Dougie wants to relive his memories he forgot.
Just… just remember that I love you, Olivia.
I always do, Adam. Good luck tonight in your game.
Thanks, darling. :*
I rolled my eyes, “darling”. Adam tries too hard to be a schmoozer with me. But he was so adorable when he did so.
