To have dessert or to pass on dessert. That is the real question here,” spoke Michelle who had the whole dessert menu in her hands.
“Michelle,” I spoke, Michelle looked up from the menu. “I said I would pay for lunch. I wasn’t talking about dessert.”
Michelle shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t care, I have money, I can get my own dessert,” she sassed.
After the waiter came back to take Michelle’s order and she began to eat it, two o’clock started to creep onto us. Annemarie has been eying my stomach all lunch; and it dawned onto me that she thought that the only reason I was buying them lunch was to tell them the news that a little McQuaid child was going to pop out of me soon.
“Annemarie, what’s on your mind?” I asked, less than subtle.
“I was just wondering about why you brought us to lunch today,” she admitted. “It was so out of the blue and sudden. Has anything big happened to you lately, Olivia?”
I blinked at her. “I’m not pregnant,” I dismissed.
Annemarie set her hand on her chest and took a deep breath. “Goodness, I was scared there. You’re too young to have a child and… I wasn’t sure what you would do.”
“Truthfully, Annemarie, I don’t even know if I want to be with Adam for all my life,” I confessed.
Both Michelle and Annemarie’s eyes burst open. “You’re thinking about breaking up with Adam?” Michelle questioned after she swallowed a bite of her dessert.
I waved my arms in the air. “I didn’t want this lunch to be about my love life,” I admitted.
“We have nothing to tell you, why not share about your life. It’s been a while since we’ve last caught up,” Annemarie reminded me as she motioned to Michelle with her mouth closed, full of food.
I shrugged my shoulders. “I really don’t know what to say. Adam’s just been different since Dougie came up to Boston,” I explained.
“How so?”
“Before Dougie came, Adam would’ve let me go to the grocery store with Tyler or Brad or anyone no big deal. But Dougie comes and if we go to the store together, Adam wants to tag along or he won’t let me go,” I enlightened. “He’s being a huge ass.”
“Is he jealous of Dougie?” Michelle questioned.
“By the way it seems, of course.”
The waiter came strolling back to our table and the bill was set on the edge. I paid for the bill – including Michelle’s dessert – and we headed out to downtown Boston to just relax and to take my mind away from everything that’s been going on with Dougie, Adam, and I.
We got some coffee and walked in and out of stores looking for dresses for me. Over and over again, I would ask Annemarie why they wanted to buy dresses for me, she never replied. Until Annemarie was in the change room, I walked over to Michelle who was looking at an array of dresses. And I asked her, “Why are we looking at dresses? Is one of you getting married?” I joked.
Michelle laughed, “Neither one of us is getting married. But your brother is and he made sure that you have a dress picked out for the wedding.”
