There are so many different types of mental illness, each one treated in a different way. Each one changing a persons life forever.
I have always believed that mental health is just as important as physical health, it is paramount.
Our brain controls our body, so if it's not healthy how are we supposed to function normally and effectively? How are we supposed to thrive and grow?
Each mental health problem is triggered by something, that trigger is something different for everybody. That trigger or set of triggers are the things that push us over the edge, the things that make us feel like we're drowning.
It makes you feel like you're drowning in your own mind, your thoughts relentless. Negative.
Sometimes you just feel like you're drifting in your own mind. Plaster a fake smile on, one that almost reaches your eyes so that no one notices. But on the inside all you're doing is screaming, screaming at yourself because you simply cannot find the words to open up about how you feel.
You just want to disappear, fade into the background and just isolate yourself. You feel useless, powerless and just not yourself.
You learn how to cover up the tear stains; the red and puffy eyes. You learn how to just go into auto pilot and get on with your day even though you just want to throw yourself down onto the floor and melt into the concrete of the pavement.
You see an illness in the mind is debilitating, it changes you completely. You can argue that physical health problems do the same, they do but this is different.
There is no set cure, no guarantee that you won't go back to square one. That you won't relapse and need the treatment all over again, that you won't feel the shear heart ache and anger at yourself for being 'pathetic' or 'stupid'.
It is so important. So important that we learn to bring up mental health in everyday conversation just like we do with physical health conditions.
We need to beat the stigma.
Our mental health provides the foundation for everything we do, if we aren't mentally healthy then we won't be our happiest.
Ask your loved ones how they are, even if you hint at the slightest little bit of dishonesty in their voice when they claim that they're 'okay', 'fine' or even 'alright' ask them if they're sure, tell them that you're there to listen. That you'll be their shoulder to cry on, be their strength!
Speak about it, beat the stigma of mental health conditions. Each and everyone of us deserves to feel happy and secure in their own mind, if we talk about how we feel and encourage each other maybe we will be one step closer to achieving happiness.
