Chapter Five
Cecile looked up timidly from the work on her desk when a huge shadow was cast over her. She caught eyes with her favorite teacher, Mr. Bronson. She didn't hear his approach due to a loud racket in a downstairs classroom.
"Cecile, can you bring this to Miss' Kellie's class?" Mr. Bronson asked her. Her kind, mustachioed teacher was held out a folded paper to her.
Vibrations from downstairs tickled her feet through her shoes.
Cecile's eyes questionably darted to Mr. Hanson, the student teacher, who usually did the simple tasks.
"Sorry! I don't know where it is!" The younger man shrugged embarrassedly when he saw her look at him. The girls around Cecile swooned at the handsome teacher in training.
Cecile quickly nodded and stood up, "Of course sir. I'll give it to her." She nodded enthusiastically and took the paper from the older man.
"A sub is here for her today, as usual. Just give it to the substitute." His bushy mustache bounced along to the words he was saying.
Cecile nodded. "Thank you, sir! I'll take good care of it!" She saluted him.
He chuckled at her. "Thank you. Oh, and Cecile?" He called after her as she proudly walked out of the door.
She poked her head back into the room. Most of the class was staring at her. Cecile began to feel a bit nervous. "Yes, sir?" She asked.
"Don't read it." He warned.
Cecile learned something about her mild-mannered teacher that day. She learned that his greying mustache looked daunting when he wasn't smiling.
Her returned smile broke away at the nerves. "Yes, sir!" She waved as she walked away.
She knew she liked the older teacher from her first day here. To think he would entrust her with such an important task...
She had a new energy in her step. She almost skipped down the halls with joy, but refrained herself. She scurried quickly down the stairs.
The paper fluttered out of her hand and landed gently on the ground. "Oops." She giggled to herself as she back tracked to pick it up.
She swiftly looked away when she realized it was opened. She couldn't look. That'll be betraying Mr. Bronson's trust he had kindly bestowed upon her.
She blindly groped around for note. Her eyebrows scrunched together when she heard a crinkle of paper, but her hand was still felt empty.
Cecile looked up into the button eyes of a bear. A jolt of fear zipped up her spine, which made her jump and her fall backwards on her butt.
"You okay?" Barrett asked. She laid her hand over her fluttering heart. Cecile exhaled a sudden breath. "You just scared me with the... um..." She stuttered, flustered.
Barry chuckled. "The bear suit? Yeah, it freaked everyone out at first." He told her as he helped her up. She took his warm and fuzzy hand.
"Speaking of, why do you wear that bear suit?" Cecile asked him. He handed her the paper which he had folded up again.
"It might sound silly, but I'm protesting. I want strict uniform policies to be banned from this school. I don't want to wear the school mascot so I just picked a bear... I know. It probably sounds a bit ridiculous, huh?" He gushed.
Cecile shook her head and laid a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry. I don't think it's ridiculous or silly. You're fighting for your cause so you have no need to be embarrassed. Plus, that's a pretty adorable bear costume.
