Chapter Twenty-Five

And then there was light.

Cecile squinted in the bright light in her face.  "Ouch..."  She rubbed her eyes with her right fist, but didn't remove her cheek from the cool desktop.

Foster turned off his phone's flashlight.  "I just saved your life.  If Mrs. Frondzle caught you sleeping, then she would kill you with her continuous chatter in detention.  It's pretty smart that the vice principal put her in charge of detention now that I think about it."  He pointed to the teacher facing the chalkboard and writing about atoms, but was talking about the new episode of Adam Ruins Everything that played last night.

"Thanks buddy...!"  She giggled sleepily before closing her eyes.  She opened them quickly when the bell rang.  She jumped up.  "Free period!  Let's go!"  She squealed and grabbed her stuff energetically.

Foster slung his book sack over his shoulder.  "It may be free for you, but I have to go to a club meeting."  He grunted.

She paused, giving him a confused stare. "Club meeting?  You're in a club?  I've never heard about this before.  I thought we were 'No Club buddies'."  She frowned.

With a shrug, Foster went ahead of her. Cecile followed him outside of the classroom.  "I'm in the school newspaper...  uh.  Club?  But I have to go to at least one meeting to be considered a member in that club...  It's the last meeting so I have to go."  He wondered if the school newspaper had the word 'club' in it or not.

"Why are you going if it is the last meeting and you've never been to another one?" Cecile asked as her feet scuffed against the dirty white floor.

Foster gave her a sideways glance. "Because being in the 'school newspaper club' or the hell looks good on my college transcript.  Being in at least one club looks good.  Also, my mom wanted me to join a club to make friends."

"Well, that didn't work."  She teased.  Foster grabbed her shoulders to giver her a noogie.  "Ow!"  Cecile laughed.

Foster released her to continue walking. "She doesn't know that.

"You know, it would be good if you joined a club.  You wouldn't be stuck up my butt half the time if that happened."  He muttered.

Cecile watched the colorful posters pass her by. "Club...?  Hmm..."  She murmured under her breath.

She was the protagonist and had to live an exciting life, so maybe a club wouldn't be so bad.  Spice up her days even more.  So what's the spiciest club out there?

Cecile smiled when she saw a poster for her future club.

Foster and Cecile swiftly crawled into the school's theater when the school day had ended.  They didn't want to be seen by anyone so they took to the humiliating task of scuffling around on their hands and knees.

It worked though. The theater geeks on the stage did not see the two figures crawling into the last row.

The two friends then peered in between the seats to their targets.  The people on the stage.

The drama club members looked like servants to a monarch.  The lackeys buzzed around the queen bee sitting on a throne.

Foster leaned into Cecile.  Her heart jumped at the sudden feel of his breath on her neck.

He pointed towards the girl on the throne.  "If you're really going through with this then watch out.  She's trouble."  Foster muttered.

Cecile felt as if she was watching animals in their natural habitat.
