Chapter Twelve

Jason walked slowly down the hallway. His shoulders and head drooped, dark bags grew under his eyes.

He hadn't slept for a few days, and he doubted that any of his other friends had. Alex hadn't even bothered showing up to school for a while, Michael refused to speak, Miles and Gabriel seemed to have shut themselves into their own worlds.

Jason felt alone and abandoned. Tyler was one of his best-friends, his death had struck them all hard. Instead of coming together and trying to get through it by supporting eachother, they broke apart.

He checked his watch, wondering why there were so many people in the hallway. It wasn't passing period, so what was going on?

"Hey Jason," someone called to him. He turned, hoping to find one of his friends, but instead saw a kid named Riley. "We're about to have an assembly in the gym, are you going?"

"What's it about?"

"Drunk driving and stuff..."

Riley went on, but Jason had stopped listening. Drunk driving? Of all the times to have an assembly, they chose the week after Tyler died in a car crash? Is that what everyone was saying? Tyler was drunk, and that's why he crashed.

"Tyler never drank..." Jason said quietly.

"What?" Riley asked.

Jason furrowed his eyebrows angrily. "They're making it seem as if Tyler was drunk!"

"He was, wasn't he?"

Before anyone knew what was happening, a fist slammed into Riley's jaw. Not Jason's. He turned to see Gabriel and Miles standing side by side. Gabe's arm was raised and his hand was balled into a fist. His expression was blank and his mouth was set in a firm line.

"Tyler wasn't drunk, you pompous ass," Alex's voice said. Looking around him, Jason saw that Michael, Alex, Gabe, and Miles had all joined him. Alex continued, "Tyler didn't drink. Is that what people are telling you?"

Riley looked up, his eyes were wide with shock. "Y-yeah, that's what everyone, even the teachers, are saying."

They all looked at each other, all of their expressions angry and sad. "They're using our friend as an example of drunk driving," Jason said.

"Those bastards!" Gabriel shouted. By now, everyone was looking at them. Teachers were watching, as if not sure whether to step in or not. They weren't hurting Riley anymore, so what could they do?

They all turned to the closest adult, who happened to be the Health teacher. "You, how dare you people? Using OUR friend's death for the benefit of your dumbass lecture," Jason muttered angrilly.

The group of five turned in unison to the main door, ignoring the shouts from teachers. Together they walked out and away from the school.

Miles lay on the bed, not moving a single muscle.

After they had left the school, they had all sat at the park for a while in silence. They spoke a few words, attempting to comfort eachother, and finally they all left.

Gabriel sat next to him, staring at the wall.

"Want to know something Miles?"

"What?"

"I could've saved him. He would've been kind of miserable at first, being a vampire, but he would've been alive."

"I know that already."

"Why didn't I do it?" Gabe asked. He was asking himself mainly, inner turmoil destroying his body. "He was my friend, wasn't he? I was going to go apologize... And he's dead now. Why didn't I save him?" he repeated.

Miles sat up silently, listening to Gabriel as he spoke. "Why did you change me? All those years ago, when you took too much blood, why did you change me?"

Gabe turned to him. "Because..."

Dun dun dun. What is Gabe going to say? I'm going to end the chapter here! Even though it's really short! But I like that point for an ending.
