In Comedy the characters must cause the jokes and not only the characters can cause the jokes but animals and anything that is not human can like a overpowered person. When creating characters they must not be mean-spirited, unlikable or just a complete jerk.
If you want to use a jerk character for comedy you must make sure that their selfish actions do not effect others, but make sure their actions will have severe consequences or effect towards relationships with those they care.
If you were to make a stupid character make sure their actions do not start the problem and make sure they are dragged in by other characters who are smart but just get the ones dragged in or cause the problem. If the stupid character were to cause the problem make sure they feel regret at first,then have redemibility/make up for their actions.
If a character had made a major mistake or a negative impact on the characters, make sure that they are made up for their actions that they have made or at least get what they deserve like in 'BoJack Horseman' where if the characters were to make a mistake from the past in relation with another close friend of theirs. It would either destroy their relationship that he was responsible for.
