Police had been searching for the two men for days now, when a squad car rolled down the old neighborhood. They stopped at each abandoned house, searching thoroughly before moving on to the next. They slowly got closer and closer to the house at the end of the street. When the police were three doors away, one shouted out, "Hey, look! There's some people over there!" The two police officers drew their guns in case there was danger and ran over to the two men lying on the grass, both had passed out.
"Whoa, it's them! We found them! They aren't looking good, call an ambulance and for backup."
Christy sat on the couch next to Jessie as their children watched a documentary. Everyone was sad and scared, they were too afraid to show their feelings. Everyone knew if one person started crying, they'd all be crying. They couldn't show their emotions, it was the only way they could hold themselves together. No one was really paying attention to the documentary. They were just lost in their own thoughts, their worries. The silence except for the sound of the documentary was broken by the phone ringing. Christy stood up and walked over to the phone. She didn't even look at the caller ID before answering.
"Hello?"
"Is this Christine Neal?"
"Yes..""Hello, this is the Encino police force, your husband and his best friend were just found. So was his brother, but he's dead." Christy froze, her heart skipped a beat. They found them. Tears flooded to her eyes.
"Th-thank you. Where.."
"They are at the closest hospital to your house. Encino hospital medical center."
"Thank you."
Christy hung up and remained frozen where she stood, tears of happiness, but also worry were falling. Jessie got up, not knowing what had happened. She hugged Christy gently and rubbed her back.
"Chris? What is it? What happened? Is everything alright?" Christy nodded her head and looked at Jessie, a smile on her face.
"Th-they found them."
Rhett and Link were in a shared hospital room. Rhett was mostly alright, both men needed to be kept on pure oxygen for a few days. Rhett also had a pretty bad concussion and some slight damage to his internal organs, which would also heal soon. Link on the other hand wasn't doing nearly as well. The doctors had to re-break his ankles to set them properly and he would need to be in physical therapy for until he could walk on them. He had several stitches from the deeper cuts. He also was severely underweight and weak. He would have to be in the hospital for a long time.
James had died, he was poisoned by the gas he filled the house with. He fainted from lack of oxygen when Rhett choked him and didn't wake up in time to get out. Rhett was not pressed with any charges, James had been the real cause for his own death, he planned to kill himself with Rhett and Link anyway, that had been the reason he locked the basement and had that chair propped up against the door.
Rhett's eyes opened about two hours later, he was first met with a bright light and thought he had died and gone to heaven. Until the light dimmed as his eyes adjusted and he was met with the face of his beautiful wife and two sons. He looked around the room and saw Link's family and finally, Link lying in the bed next to his, tubes up his nose and down his throat and a breathing mask over them. "Rhett! You're awake!" Jessie's voice seemed so much louder than it was to Rhett's ears. He had a bit of a headache.
"Y-yeah, I'm back. We made it, Jess. How's Link?" Christy looked up, her eyes were filled with tears.
"N-not too great. He's recovering, but it's going to take a long time. He-he's in a coma! A coma!! They are feeding him through a tube, he can't breathe by himself, Rhett. He lost so much weight and so much blood. He weighs 124 pounds! He's six feet! That's severely underweight!" (Yes, it possible for someone Link's height to weight that much. That just fits into the category of severely underweight. Any heavier is only underweight.)
Christy started to cry as she tried to tell Rhett everything that was wrong with her husband. She broke down before she could finish and held Link's hand tightly. Rhett's heart completely broke as Jessie finished telling him everything. Tears built up in his eyes too and he felt like his heart had been completely shattered. He wished with all his heart he had never left that day. What if he had been able to prevent all of this from happening? He wanted to just take this all away from his brother. Link never did anything to deserve this.
Link's family had all started crying and Rhett did too. Link was basically on life support. Not quite, but he was very close to it. "Honey.. I-I'm so sorry..." Jessie knelt down beside her sobbing husband's bed and held his hand gently.
"I-It's not your fault, Jess." Jessie sighed and rubbed Rhett's shoulder gently. He turned and looked over at Link, his brother. "Link, I know you can hear me, buddy. I promise to stay with you. Stay right by your side as you go through this. Take care of you. You'll get better, you'll come back home to us. And sooner than you would think. Everything will be alright in the end. Don't you worry. Please, I will be right here for you and everything will be great. You got away from James. You'll never have to worry about him. H-he didn't make it out in time. But you'll get better and we got out of there! I promise you, I vow to you, I'm not going anywhere. I'll be sticking around here as often as possible. Being there for you, because you've always done the same for me. You're sick right now and it's gonna take a long time for you to get better, but you will. You will. I know you will. You can do this. You can get through this. Believe in yourself, because I believe in you."
