My dearest Butler

Chapter 8

"Birthday?" I ask rather myself than him.

He frowns at me. "Yes, today is your birthday. Everyone is talking about it and today there will be a great party-"

"Oh, that's why Mark wanted the alpha not to come today..." I think out loud.

"So... You didn't just act surprised but really forgot about your birthday?"

I nod at him. "I don't really like that day, so why should I be looking forward to it..."

"Don't you celebrate it?" He asks curiously.

"I myself don't. But everyone else does. I just hold a little speech and go back to work after."

He tilts his head to the side "What happened on your past birthdays that you don't like them?"

I take in a deep breath before answering "For example... my last human birthday was the day John died."

He cringes at my respond, maybe being sorry for asking.

He scratches the back of his head awkwardly "Sorry, I shouldn't have asked and you already told me about John... I'm sorry." He breathes out before saying "I'm sorry for your loss. I really mean it though."

I shrug it off "It's alright, it was a long time ago, I probably shouldn't be sad about it anymore." I think about the last part he said and it kind of was really touching. I guess he really does care. "Thank you." I whisper as I hug him.

He wraps his arms around me too and for the first time in a while I feel close to someone. I almost forgot how nice it feels.

We just stay like that for a little longer until a knock appears on the door. It is Mark. "Your highness, the alpha will soon arrive."

"Crap." I mutter to myself.

"What is it with this alpha guy?" He wonders. "Why is he the alpha and why did you invite him if you don't want to?"

"He is the alpha that stands above all the others. He's like the king of the wolves. You've heard about the elder, right? The head wanted me to do that. Depending on what he is planning to do, I might have to do something too. Something I really don't want to." I take a dress out of the closet. "Well, I have to get ready."

"Wait." He grabs my sleeve to stop me. "What is it that you may have to do?"

I offer him a warm smile "We'll see when the time comes."

I quickly go shower and dress myself. As I walk out of the bath, I see Sebastian sitting on my bed, waiting for me. "Is there something you need?" I ask him.

"Hm?"

"Because you're still here." I point out.

"Oh, sorry... I should probably go then..." He says awkwardly before he gets up to leave the room.

I wait until he is gone and slowly make my way over to the door. I reach out for the handle and open the small wooden wall that separates me from my future hell.

I peak outside and let out a breath as I slowly take very small steps in human speed. I watch as my feel get closer to their destination and feel myself panicking. It's too fast, I can't do this! I just want to run away, to leave everything behind, to get back to the time John and I where together.

But obviously I can't. I'm the lonely queen now, I am the queen of witches, strix, vampires and the undead. Everything happens for a reason and maybe destiny wanted me to concentrate on ruling my empire without distractions and without weaknesses.

Seems like she did an awful job since my butler starts growing on me.

I guess I have to change that and be the lonely queen. Forever.

I take a deep breath and walk down the corridor in normal speed.

I am ready for this, I can do it.

I open the does and step inside but what I find, surprises me. People cheering and congratulating me, a pile of presents, leaves and flowers being thrown in the air as confetti and a big cake.

"Happy birthday, your highness!" They all shout in sync.

After thinking about nothing but the marriage it actually surprised me. Feeling thankful for them to do that for me and to make me stop thinking about that, I smile at them. Suddenly they all start singing the birthday song and just like when John did this for me, I don't know what to do and smile while awkwardly fiddling around with my fingers.

Once they are done they all clap in their hands, cheering again while Sebastian walks up to me to hand me a piece of cake. I thank him and take it.

"Thank you all so much." I say to them. "Thank you for being here and celebrating my 77th birthday with me. It means the world to me that you all are here, with me, happy and that you all are happy with me as your queen. Just like you are there for me, I will make sure that I will be there for you. I will try to be the best I can be. For you."

"To the queen!" They all yell and I can't help but feel proud.

I take a bite of the cake and take in its deliciousness. It's apple pie. I wonder if they knew...

Before I can think about it for too long, the great gates opposite of me fly open and a bunch of wolves walk in.

They all walk to the front, to me, while the people move away to make some space. The fury alpha looks behind to his wolves and they all stop. He lumbers towards me and walks up the stairs. His golden orbs glow as they stare at me.

I stare at him with curiosity while he looks up at me. I suddenly hear the sound of bones breaking and see how he starts to shift into his human form. Along with him, his people shift in their human skin too and soon my people and I stare at a bunch of strangers. Naked ones may I add.

His now hazel eyes watch me as I look at his face and his brown locks that are about to touch his shoulders.

I feel like everyone watches us curiously for what might happen and I start to feel a bit uneasy. But at the same time I admire these shifters for their confidence to just randomly stand here. Naked.

I catch myself staring at his chest but look back at his face. No need to be impolite, right? Or just weird...

He smirks at me and offers me a hand to shake. "Hi, I'm Jack."

Also, sorry. I planned to update a bit earlier but well... It didn't work out ._.

The next update will be on Sunday and since that will be the day of seeing my dog for the first time, I will write the chapter tomorrow and update Sunday morning:)
