When I woke up, I could feel my head throb. I groaned and tried to lay back down, but the customary migraine had already struck. I hated panic attacks. They left me weak and vulnerable for almost a day afterwards. I could take any medications, it wouldn't help.
But, as I tried remembering what had brought on the panic attack, I happened to glance around. I froze, the sight was not of my bedroom. I was somewhere I had never been before, and that scared me. Who knew what had happened when I was unconscious? Only Dom did, but I wasn't about to ask. I wouldn't be hurt by him again.
Then, I heard some voices outside of the door. This time, I did not go looking for a weapon, but I did press my ear against the door and listen in.
A voice I did not recognize said,"Quelque chose de mal avec la fille?" And the I heard Dom.
"Non, elle vient d'avoir une attaque de panique." For the life of me, I suddenly wished I had taken French. I could understand the gist of what Dom had said only because of the panic attack, but the rest was gibberish to me.
No matter how hard I listened, I still could not hear them when they did speak English; a dull hum filled my ears and I gave up. But, when they both walked into the room, scaring me from the floor where I had fallen, I had seen what the other guy had looked like.
He wasn't that bad looking. Dark brown hair fell to his chin and was swept away from his face with only a few strands falling in his eyes. He had dark green eyes and pale lips, but his pale skin is what grabbed my attention.
"Darling." Dom practically sang out, rushing over to me and enveloping me in a hug. "This is Daniel."
I resigned myself to the fact I was being hugged and smiled softly over at Daniel. "It's nice to meet you." He nodded.
"Well, you two are no fun. Plus, I have a few errands to run, so yeah. Daniel, make sure she doesn't run off. I will have your head if she leaves or is harmed in any way." He shot a glare at Daniel, who seemed remarkably unaffected by Dom's threats.
After he had gone, we sat in silence for a few moments, trying to figure out what to say. I finally broke the ice and asked him, "How old are you?"
He grinned and I could have sworn I saw canine teeth glimmer out. "I am older than Domonic. Somewhere in my mid 2,000's?" I stared, surprised at how young he looked. "Oh. And before you ask, I do have sharp canine teeth. Comes with the job."
I had to ask. "And that job is?" He leaned in close.
"I am the Enforcer for Mates. Simply put, those with Mates, I make sure that both partners manage to get past the initial steps and actually become Mates. I also put down rogues."
I nodded, but couldn't help the giggles that began escaping me without permission. He stared at me, most likely wondering if I was crazy.
"I just couldn't help but think of the fact that I am in a teen fiction novel." He shrugged.
"Yeah, you kind of are. Sorry." I shook my head.
"It isn't your fault."
As the night fell, I began to get closer to Daniel. I started to think of him as an older brother; someone who protects you and is there for you. So, right as I was dozing off on Daniel, Dom walked in.
He had been bright and cheerful before, but as soon as he saw our position, his mood switched. I could feel the jealousy rolling off of him in waves, and he managed one sentence. "Get out, Daniel. Before I rip off your head."
Daniel bolted almost immediately, shooting me a worried glance. I was still half asleep, so I did not understand the situation I was really in. I thought Daniel had left of his own volition, and I was cold. So, standing up, I walked over to Dom and dragged him back to the couch where I had been resting. I shoved him into a seated position, and then curled up besides him, my head on his chest.
He was super warm, almost to the point I didn't need a blanket. But, I could feel his stiff body beneath me. He felt uncomfortable, so I quickly got up in search of a blanket. I was going to explain how cuddling meant loosening up, but when I got back, he was already stretched out and open for me to lay the blanket over both of us.
I kissed his cheek and snuggled back into his chest. "I love you." I whispered.
"I love you as well, darling."
And with that, we were out like lights.
