Chapter 4- The Stalking Device

Just as I reached the top of the stairs Dr. Frame said, "oh! I have an idea! You head to the truck and I'll be there in a second!" He tossed me the keys and scrambled back into the basement. I looked at the keys then shrugged, taking off for his truck.

As I got outside the cry of police sirens made my adrenalin go up. I gulped and unlocked his truck, then sliding in shotgun, quickly starting the engine.

It roared to life as I bounced my legs nervously, waiting for Dr. Frame to come back out. My heart raced as I could hear the sirens get louder and louder. "Come on, doc. What are you doing in there?" I said to myself when Dr. Frame bolted out of his front door, jumping off the porch and slid into the front seat, slamming on the gas while putting the truck in reverse.

The truck shot back as Dr. Frame spun the steering wheel, then zooming down the street. He looked down at the gadget in his lap, then pulled out the needle full of my glowing blood from his pocket and placed it between his teeth.

"What are you doing?" I questioned. Dr. Frame gripped onto the wheel with one hand while playing around with the machine in his other.

"Hang on" he said with the needle still in his mouth. I looked at the device and frowned. It looked like the end of a very large fishing rod, but had a screen in the center with blinking lights around it. One large antenna poked out from the top, swinging around while Dr. Frame pushed buttons and screwed little things in.

I looked up and screamed, "watch out!" Dr. Frame looked up and swerved the truck around an old lady crossing the street who decided to tell us we were number one. "Hey! We're driving here!" I yelled back.

I turned back to Dr. Frame who took the needle out of his mouth and shoved it inside a little slot on the left of the machine. He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel when the gadget light up and started beeping and blinking.

"Ha! Yes! I did it!" Dr. Frame grinned while handing me the device. I looked at it to see a map on the little screen. "Is this a GPS or something?" I asked. Dr. Frame swerved the truck again, crossing Main Street.

"Kinda. I modified my meteor detector to the kiddo tracker! See, it will take your radioactive blood as a sample, then using it as something to target!"

I gave Dr. Frame a very confused look, unsure what that meant. To me I felt like he could stalk me using this gizmo, which didn't really help the mood. I felt enough weirdness as it was, and the idea if my chemistry teacher stalking me just got me more nervous.

"Can I get that translated to someone who has a B in your class" I replied. Dr. Frame still was smiling when he said, "those kids probably have the same result as you. So on a good scale they have blood a lot like yours. So then the GPS will find them using your blood as a sample." Now we were getting somewhere.

I looked at the gadget, seeing a orange dot at our location. That must have been me. "So since those kids mostly likely got adopted by this time, we can track them instead of barging into an orphanage looking crazy" Dr. Frame continued. "We're still crazy though."

I laughed and said, "never been more bonkers ever." Dr. Frame smiled at me with a twinkle in his brown eyes.

I turned my attention back at the device and zoomed the map out, seeing several dots spread out on a map of just our city. That means not too many of the kids were far away.

Giving a sigh of relief, I sat back in my seat. "We're going to start with the dot furthest to the east" Dr. Frame said stopping at a red light.

Just as we slowed down police cars zoomed past us, scaring the glow right out of me. As they got farther and farther away I started to calm down. "Phew. That was close" I whispered. Dr. Frame started driving again, keeping a good eye out for cops.

I quietly sat, gazing at the device thinking, there are actually more people out there, like me. They might glow like me. They might have weird dreams like me. They might actually know my strange life, and how that feels.

Happiness and curiosity came over me as I tried bringing my memories back to the night the incident happen. I couldn't get a good idea of what the other orphans were like, except for one. Her and I kinda hung out. She rarely spoke. What was her name again...

"Luke" Dr. Frame said snapping me out of my trance. I shook my head, looking at him.

He stopped the truck in front of an old fashioned Victorian house, painted with a grayish blue. The yard was in good condition, and the leaves from all the large oak trees around it were all raked up.

Despite that a strange kid lived here, they looked to have an average life. I cocked my head and looked at the device again, holding it up to see two blinking, orange dots standing still at our location.

I gulped, looking at the house again then at Dr. Frame. "W-what do we do?" Dr. Frame stroked his goatee then said, "well the kids effect by the meteorite were all in the same age group. So first off, we know the kid will be your age. Look for a burn like yours and see if there is any unusual activity."

I sighed, rubbing my forehead. "No. What do I say? I just can't go up and asked, "hey, does anyone with usual super powers live here by chance?" They'll think I'm a loon!"

Dr. Frame paused then snapped his fingers. "Say your doing a poll for the amount of orphans living in the area. Then ask to interview the kid!" I hesitated, thinking if this was such a good idea or not. Then seeing the clock change digits on the radio, I knew I didn't have much time.

"Alright. Wish me luck" I said climbing out of the truck. As I made my way up to the house I could hear piano music from the inside. It sounded tricky. Like Mozart, hands tied while blindfolded tricky.

Slowly, climbing up the steps I stood in front of the door, raising my hand to knock, but stopping. Was there really a unique kid living here, just like me? My heart raced as I willed my hand to knock.

The piano music stopped and the sound of footsteps got louder. My heart banged against my rib cage as the lock on the door clicked and the door slowly opened. My eyes widened as I saw a kid, my age standing there, looking at me with his hypnotizing blue eyes.

"H-hi" I croaked. "I'm doing a survey for the amount of orphans that live in the local area. There wouldn't happen to be any orphans living here?"

The kid smiled, bobbing his head full of curly red hair. "Yup. I'm from Oak Hill Orphanage." That's where I'm from. This is the guy, I said inside my head. Giving a nervous smiled I said, "really? I'm from there too."

The freckled face boy smiled as I examined him. He wore a blue sweater vest and jeans with sneakers. Average and no burn. I felt I was getting no where.

Looking back at his face I said, "m-my name is Luke." He grinned and said, "hey! I remember you! You were that kid who ran around in nothing but underwear and a red cape!" My face turned as red as his hair. "Y-yeah. That's me" I stuttered.

He laughed and held out his hand. "I'm Max. Max Stanley." I shook his hand and then tried to make a useful conversation starter. "Were you there when that meteor hit? I was and I thought you might too."

Max nodded his head. "Yup. I got this nasty burn on my foot from it. Still hurts to this day." I did a mental "happy snoopy dance" and felt a smiled grow across my face showing him my right arm. "You don't say?"

He laughed and said, "guess I'm not the only one in pain!" Giving a settle chuckle, I stuffed my hands in my pockets saying, "were you okay? I mean, I don't remember much of the day, but I just was worried someone got hurt badly."

Max shrugged. "I don't remember much ether. I assume everyone is still alive though." I nodded when I said the question that ripped the bandaid of the cut.

"Have you had any, unusual side effects?" Max's face went pale as he looked at me then slowly closed his front door.

Gazing at me in the eyes Max said, "your one too, aren't you?" I grinned thinking, score.
