Chapter 2-
I nodded. Staring straight ahead. I think I should go. Clear the air? I don’t know. Even if I don’t see Rhys at the party I will have to see him eventually. Even if I try not to, our brothers’ work together I’ll have to. His family will come down to see the Queen's diamond jubilee because Joe and Sam will be in that and some Olympic stuff. I won’t be able to avoid him. May as well get this situation behind us. Again.
‘I’ll get you a train ticket then. Unless mum will let you on the back of bike.’
‘Doubt it,’ I replied. I’ve wanted to go on Joe’s bike since he got it but mum says stuff about safety and crashing.
‘Ticket it is then,’ Joe laughed.
I looked at Joe’s phone; it’s already 10:45. Ughh I hate exams but on a Monday morning, well, that’s just cruel. ‘Night’ I said standing up.
‘Why you going to bed?’ Joe asked.
‘I have a maths exam in the morning; remember those things you failed which test your brain.’ I laughed poking his head and pushing him back.
‘Alright, no need to be offensive.’ Joe put his hand over his heart with supposed upset look on his face. ‘Night lil sis,’ he smiled.
‘Night,’ Sam called after me.
As soon as I was in bed I was out of it. Today had been . . . long.
Shit. I hadn’t done any maths. Shit shit shit. No its fine. Abbie can teach me on the way to school. Thank god for smart friends.

E03. Abbie was sitting in D02. We normally sit next to each other in exams, both of or surnames starting with a H. We had just double checked our seats; Abbie was going over factorising with me again. God I hate math. We checked our phones before turning them off. Messages appeared on my screen all well wishes from my family. Mum, Joe, Aunts, Dad and Rhys. How did he know? I never told him. I read them then turned my phone off taking out the battery. Abbie and I made our way to our seats laid our phones with the batteries on top on the desk. The head of math walked in, acting all high and mighty as usual. The same old speech of doing our best and how we know all of this stuff went on for what seemed like the longest five minutes of my life. The hall turned over the exam paper in unison and we begun.
‘If I see another number I will scream,’ I laughed as Abbie and I walked to second period.
‘What lesson have you got now?’
‘Umm,’ I should really learn my timetable; all I knew was that it wasn’t math.
‘Hey Kat, you coming geography?’ Lauren saved me.
Geography that’s what I had. ‘Yeah coming,’ I hugged Abbie bye and ran over to Lauren.
‘God that was by far the longest hour of my life,’ Lauren hated math as much as me. I don’t think it helped that all we done in the lessons as talk at the back. But hey if you’re talking to me about Pythagoras’ theorem or shoes I’m most likely going to opt for the shoes.
‘Don’t even get me started. On the last question I started wring anything that looked smart. And on the question when it asked about the angle of the triangle, five marks. A triangle is 180° and it asked you to explain. Ughh!’ I ranted on.
‘At least you answered, I left out 21 marks,’ Lauren smiled.
The bell rang and the whole class ran out of the like a pack of wolves about to go hunting. I made my way through the playground and saw Abbie. She was talking to Paige. ‘Hey.’ Paige and Abbie greeted me in unison.
‘You alright?’ I nodded.
‘Where were you? I phoned you and everything.’ Abbie stated. It had only taken me a few minutes to get across the playground. But Abbie was always curious of people’s whereabouts and what they were doing.
‘Did you? I didn’t get it.’ I checked my phone. It was still off. ‘Sorry hadn’t even turned it on.’ Abbie and Paige laughed at my stupidity. As I was turning my phone on we walked inside to our usual heater. Why England was so cold I will never know. When my phone had taken its time turning on a call came through. I moaned as Rhys’ picture brightened up my screen.
‘What is it?’ Paige and Abbie’s blue eyes intently searching my face for clues. I showed my phone to them. Only Emma, Paige and Abbie knew about Rhys. Everyone thought I was just in a happy relationship. ‘Oh,’ I nodded to their unspoken question of “has he cheated?” They both knew that he never phoned during school. With our different break and lunch hours we didn’t want to get the other into trouble. Paige pulled me into a hug. My phone had stopped vibrating. But quickly started again. He wasn’t going to let this lie. ‘Hola?’ I walked around the corner and sat on the stairs leading to ICT.
‘How was the exam?’ The familiar Manchurian voice greeted me down the phone.
‘Why are you really phoning?’ All Spanish pretence left me voice.
‘Can I call you?’
‘You have.’ I stated. ‘Look Rhys I’ve gotta go.’
‘No I mean tonight, I don’t want things being frosty before Saturday. You are coming on Saturday. Aren’t you?’ Desperation seeped into his voice.
‘Phone if you want but I might be busy, Joe’s still home. If I’m not there, you know Lorna’s number.’ I hung up and turned my phone off again; knowing Rhys would only try to reach me again.
I made my back round the corner, brushing the back of my black skirt in case of dirt marks.
‘Everything ok?’ Abbie voice full of concern.
‘Yeah I’ve already spoken to Emma.’ Emma didn’t go to our school and neither Abbie nor Paige knew her. I’d grown up with Emma and she lived on the other side of the borough. Both of them knew that Emma helped me through most of my troubles, Emma being more like a sister than anything else. Everyone thought we were cousins and it was easier to say we were.
‘So, are you going to be busy tonight or will you speak to him?’ Paige asked.
‘Not sure, but I am going to the party so I’ll have to see him anyway.’ The bell range and all of the younger years swarmed the corridor so we headed for the door. This day had only stared but I knew it was going to be long.
