You Upset Him

"For once, can't you just let me have the last word?" he whispered, his back still turned towards you. "Do you always have to have a witty reply ready? Do you know what it's like being mocked constantly by everyone because I can't win an argument against you? I'm sick of it. I'm sick of the nicknames people call me when my back is turned. I didn't join Hogwarts to be bullied by some (Your Height) (Your Gender). How about you just leave me alone, hey? Just leave me alone, with my books, to read in peace. Or is that too much for me to ask?"

Out of all the harsh exchanges you two had shared, this one truly resonated with you. You had no idea that Newt was hurting so badly. You weren't a bully. Realising how unhappy he was, you suddenly regretted your past words. Were people really mocking him?

A deep blush spread over your cheeks. You felt ashamed. Clenching your fists at your side, you were unsure what to say to the boy standing before you. "I...I'm so sorry. I had no idea...I thought..."

"What's it matter?" he turned on the spot, facing you once more. You noticed the unhappiness in his eyes. For so long you had assumed it was a smugness directed at you, know you knew better. You knew that it was a undeniable sadness, which you had put there. "I'm stupid to think that you'd care how I feel. You hate me. This must be quite the victory for you. Well, congratulations, you've won."

You scoffed. "If this is winning, then I'd rather be the loser."

Smiling dejectedly, Newt shrugged. He finally returned to his spot on the floor, book now in hand. "Like I said, just leave. I'll see you later for our next round in the ring, no doubt."

His attention was no longer on you, you had now been dismissed. Dumbfounded, you walked away, feeling completely numb. How were you going to fix this mess?
