I walked back to the house with Xander, who fell asleep along the way with a small smile on his face. His eyes drifted open and he rubbed them with his tiny fists as I came up onto the lawn. His back arched and a yawn erupted from his throat. Xander realized where we were and frantically glanced up at me.
"It's okay. They aren't mad at you for what my parents did," I whispered.
His eyes became downcast as I said this and filled with shame.
"I'm sorry if I upset your parents," Xander quietly said into my chest.
I chuckled at the situation. Little Xander had no idea what those people were like.
"Honey, they are cruel people. Whatever anyone said to them, I have no doubt they fully deserved it."
His eyes cautiously looked at me.
"Really?"
He slipped out of my arms and stepped on the wooden porch that was painted in white.
"Really," I reassured him.
I opened the door and motioned him inside. His green eyes glanced up at me as he tentatively stepped past me. I stood behind him and closed the large, wooden door. The children were already gone. I knew Blake and Lexi must need some time to recuperate after dealing with my rude parents. They were curled up together on the inviting couch. Xander shyly waved at them. I placed my hands on his hips and noticed his tiny jolt forward with a grin.
"You don't have to be shy, Xander," Lexi said as she waved us over.
Xander hesitated for a slight moment before curling up in a ball next to me on the couch. He was such a cutie, I thought. I just couldn't get over his delicate beauty. However, I could still feel his wrist panging and throbbing. I had no idea how he hadn't said anything about it, or at least asked for some ice by now. His agony infuriated me.
"We won't bite you," Lexi said with some laughter in her voice.
"I think Alex will do that for us," She giggled.
She waved her elegant fingers towards Xander's neck. He froze and then his face burned a bright crimson. My lips twitched in amusement.
"Aw, you're so adorable!" Lexi squealed.
She tried to pinch his pink cheeks and Xander paled in fright. He didn't like people touching him; I had noticed that before. I guess that he just made an exception for me.
"We won't hurt you," Blake's deep voice rumbled.
Xander squeaked and his eyes darted up to meet his dark gaze. A small smile tilted Blake's lips and Xander pressed back against me. I didn't mind, especially after all he had been through today. Besides, Blake was frightening to anyone who hadn't seen him before, especially a person as fragile and vulnerable as Xander. I had never seen someone so shy before. It was almost a disease, it was so debilitating to him.
Lexi reached her small hand out and Xander stared at it for a moment. He finally reached his hand towards hers, inch by trembling inch. Lexi suddenly grasped his hand and pulled his practically weightless body towards her with her deceptive strength. His eyes widened at the movement. Her arms squeezed him until his tense body relaxed. Her hands softly rubbed his back for a few minutes before she released him.
Blake smiled in amusement. Xander moved next to me again, much more relaxed. We all talked and laughed together for the rest of the day. His pain was really upsetting me, but I let it go for now. I didn't want to make a scene in front of Lexi and Blake.
We had dinner and it worried me when Xander only nibbled at a little bit of food. He only had a fourth of what I ate, but he still barely finished. It seemed as if he was unused to eating. Xander had more coffee than actual food.
