Max came upstairs to talk with me once Xander left. His hazel eyes were swimming with turmoil.
"Hey, Alex."
He smiled at me. I couldn't get over how frail he looked. What could have caused this?
"Sorry that I haven't really talked to you since you got here. I've been busy with Xander."
I missed talking with Max. He was my best friend.
"Is he your boyfriend?" He asked.
There was a small smile on his face. I could tell he approved.
"Yes, he is."
I broadly smiled at the thought of my adorable mate.
"He seems like a sweetheart. Is he okay? He seems really shy."
"Yes, he just doesn't like strangers. I'll introduce you guys when he gets back."
He shyly nodded.
"There is a real reason I looked you up."
I was intrigued, and nodded my head for him to continue.
"You remember when my parents said that...me being how I am was going to kill me one day?"
I frowned at the thought of those intolerant people, but answered,"Yes."
Max sighed and took a deep breath.
"Well, they were right. My lover gave me Aids, and I'm going to die. The terrible thing is that I finally tried to have sex with a woman to make them happy, and that's how I got sick."
There were tears in his eyes. I gasped. Was I going to lose everyone I loved? I hugged him tightly. There were tears in my eyes as well.
"I'm taking all the medicine, so it will be years if all goes well, but it will happen. I am moving down here. I want to enjoy the beach before I die."
My throat closed up with tears and I rubbed his back. I separated from our friendly embrace when Lexi came running up the stairs with an urgent look on her face.
"We have to go. Now."
I stared at her in confusion.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
She sighed in irritation.
"Someone attacked Xander. He is sleeping in the hospital, but he needs you. We need to go pick him up."
Fury that someone would dare hurt my mate blurred my vision for a few seconds, but I nodded.
"Let's go."
"Honey, can you stay here and watch them?"
Blake nodded and handed her the silver key to his truck. We rushed to the truck. My body vibrated with pain. Why did it seem like everyone else only wanted to hurt him? Why couldn't they just leave him alone so that he could be happy? Was that such a terrible thing?
"The doctors said that it was pretty bad, but we can take him home today. The guy is in prison and has been known for assault before, so I don't think Xander had to press charges, which is good because we both know he wouldn't do that. I called Jane to see if she knew anything about this, but she said her and her mate left about an hour before this happened. She said he told her he was going to buy a laptop before going back home. That's all I know."
I faintly heard this, but all I knew was that I had to get to my mate. He needed me! I couldn't believe I wasn't there to protect him! Xander was vulnerable and hurt right now, and he needed the comfort and safety that I knew only I could offer him. My fingers tensed as we parked and I was immediately out of the car. Lexi ran toward me and tugged on my arm.
