I sat quietly in my seat, staring out the window as we whizzed by the trees. No one spoke, no one wanted to for there was nothing to say. We did what needed to be done, we went to Bob's funeral, and now we're heading to DC to get a fake scientist to whatever it is he's trying to get to. I could slowly begin to feel myself becoming resentful towards Eugene. He wasn't a scientist and he's making people taking him to DC and now he's dragged me and my people into it. I just hope whatever reason he has is a good one otherwise I might just fucking kill him.
I was really hoping Daryl would've been there before I left, but maybe it was better this way. I didn't want us to leave on a bad note, but I didn't want us to leave on a good one either. I couldn't imagine the heartbreak Daryl would feel after us making up only to find out I'm leaving for DC without him while he and the others search for Beth. He'd hate me... more than he already does.
"How about some music?" Abraham asked.
"Beats sittin' in the silence." Maggie scoffed. Abraham looked up at me in the mirror.
"How about it, Monster? I sure do miss hearin' ya sing."
"No, thank you." I murmured without looking up.
"Don't worry, we'll see 'em again, Daryl too."
"I don't think she's really up to talking, Abraham." Rosita pointed out. Abraham looked from Rosita back to me and sighed.
"Try and get ya some sleep. I know ya didn't sleep any last night." I didn't respond. "It'll make this trip go by a lot faster, too." Abraham was trying to do his best to cheer me up, he knew leaving my family behind was hard on me. I got what I was looking for since we lost the prison, and I gave it up, just like that, so he'd stay and help keep them alive. He was right though, I didn't sleep last night. I stayed up hoping that Daryl would walk through the sanctuary doors and make up, but that never happened. Daryl never came. Daryl never got to say goodbye.
I rested my head against the window, ignoring the urge to sleep. "It's getting a little messy for you." Rosita said to Abraham as she messed with his hair.
"Gettin' ready for retirement." Abraham smiled. "Relaxin' the groomin' standards. Thinkin' about becomin' a plumber, a sheepherder, or somethin'."
"You ain't herding sheep now, Abraham. Eyes on the prize."
"Damn right." Abraham chuckled. "That's my girl. Maybe I'll let ya shave me down all over, dolphin-smooth." Rosita gently smacked Abraham's arm and laughed.
"I'll cut it for you tonight."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Hey, maybe Rosita can give you a trim while she's at it." Maggie suggested to Eugene. "Party's gettin' a little long in the back. Or is it your source of power?"
"I ain't slayin' a lion anytime soon." Eugene deadpanned. "I wouldn't be placin' any wagers on seein' me dispatch a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of an ass."
"Oh, so you'll just settle for savin' the world, right?"
"Yeah." Eugene sighed.
"What's up?" Eugene didn't respond. "Last night?"
"Nope... yes. That and tomorrow. And I'm thinkin' about that preacher, what he did."
"Maybe they're just behind us. Maybe Daryl and Carol came back. Maybe they took the map, found some cars, and they're just down the road."
"They'll catch up." Glenn smiled. "We're clearing the way for them." I rolled my eyes and silently scoffed. They weren't behind us, not in the slightest. I finally closed my eyes and drifted to sleep, anything was better than listening to these people's false hopes.
