Still No Shadow

It wasn’t Shadow coming back, but at least I didn’t really dread the next few hours of school after I knew Amy wasn’t mad at me anymore. I met her after school and had no problems, although she asked if it was okay to hang in the morning with the rest of the group but I wasn’t too sure it would be a good idea. I guess I’ll just have to talk to them tomorrow and if not then I’ll just spend time with her until Shadow got back. I hope that’s a good idea, Shadow doesn’t seem to really like her either, not like he did to me I mean this is his true hatred.

Now thinking of Shadow I kinda miss him… I took out my phone looking at the screen. Should I call him? Maybe he’s busy… just a text to get his attention. I stopped for a second at a street sign to send him the text. ‘Are you busy?’ I put it away and began walking again almost home. It was hard not to keep checking my phone at the second of every minute. But the wait of his reply was agonizing!  I even walked in the door staring at my screen.

“Hi honey.” Mom greeted me. I looked up and quickly put my phone away giving her a hug.

“Hi mom.”

“How was school? Did you see Amy?”

“Yeah, we’re cool now.” I nodded and put down my back pack.

“That’s great hun! Do you have homework?”

“Uh, Science.” I grumbled turning back and unzipped my back pack pulling out my papers. I sat at the table quickly jotting down these totally easy answers but still glancing at my phone. Was he even going to answer?! I don’t normally keep my phone on my person at all times, but tonight I’ll make an acceptation.

Dad came down the stairs and greeted me with a pat on my head.

“Ow.” I grunted when his metallic hand came down a little too hard.

“Oh I’m sorry son too hard again?”

“I’m okay.” I mumbled rubbing the top of my head where he thumped me on.

“Dear could you adjust my hydraulics so I won’t be hitting others heads off?” He asked with a slight chuckle.

“Oh Jules.” Mom laughed and tended to him right away.

I sighed in thought. What would dad be like without his mettle body? I never really asked what it was like being a robian in the first place, I was always just told to except it.

“Hey dad, can you see in color?” I asked looking back at him.

“Of course! Well now I can, but when Robotnic had control over all the robians everything was shaded red… you couldn’t define friend or foe by color, because everything was to be your enemy.”

Hm, I never knew that… well at least he can see in color now. “Can you feel?”

“Hmm?” He hummed slightly tilting his head at the question and looked back at me.

“Sonic…” My mother grunted and nudged me giving me a quick glare, “I thought we talked about this already…” she whispered to me.

“Wha, no I mean… like textures can you feel what is soft or hard or hot and cold?” I fixed my specification.

“Oh.” He shook his head, “No, not textures anyway… but I can remember how soft your mother’s quills were when she had them brushed.” He said his eyes giving off a smile. “As for hot and cold, well my sensors will pick those up, I can’t really feel them but I’m just told that is what it is. Like a blind person being told that a banana is yellow. They can’t see it, so they’ll just have to believe that’s what it is.” He took a banana from the kitchen counter and handed it over to me, “after school snack son?”

I took the banana looking at it for a moment, gosh what if someone never saw color before and they really didn’t know what color goes to an object? For all they know bananas could be red and apples are purple! Then again would color mean anything to them if they’ve never saw color before? I set aside my wonders; it wasn’t like I was going to get an answer… and pealed the banana taking a bite from it. I looked down at my phone … nothing.

“Expecting a call?” he asked sitting down across from me.

“No… just a text message.” I said frowning at the phone giving me nothing.

“From??”

“A friend…” I sighed a little annoyed that they could be so nosy and because they’re parents they have the right to know.

“You ever make up with that Amy girl?” He asked.

“Yeah. I made it up to her today.” I answered poking at my phone as if to wake it up or something.

“No more trouble with that Shadow kid?”

My heart jumped at the sound of his name, and I winced remembering dad could pick up on those slight changes, he can’t know I like the same guy who was sending me home bruised and almost broken limbs! “Uh, no… in fact he was um expelled from school for a while now.” I said. I knew he could tell my nervousness.

“Oh really?” He said suspecting. I have to pull it together!

“Yeah for a week now. He might be coming back sometime this week though but no more trouble with him.” I said calming my nerves.

“Mmhm…” he took up a newspaper by his side and started to scan it over.

Phew he’s sidetracked now. Dinner will be done soon… and still not a word from Shadow! I glanced at m phone angrily for the fifth time before putting it away. I’ve made my mind up that he’s not going to answer back tonight.
