six: a happy day

SUZY

I stared at the person who was walking towards my table.

"Are you that hungry?" He said, eyeing the extra steak in front of me.

I shook my head and cleared my throat. "It was someone else's. But they left. I'm about to leave as well—"

I stopped and looked at him as he sits down on the chair in front of me. "Did that person touch this? It'd be a waste if they just threw it away." Without even waiting for my reply, he started to munch on the steak.

I just stared at him as he devours the steak. Moments later, he notices that I have just been staring at him and sets down his utensils with a mouth full of meat.

I looked down and fought the urge to smile. He looked cute, like a hamster.

"Are you not going to eat that?" I quickly blinked and glanced back at him.

"Because if you're not, then—" I hit his hand away to halt him from stealing my plate. I'm suddenly hungry, too.

"No! I'll eat it," I said and picked up my utensils as I start to cut and eat a few pieces.

I felt him staring, and so I glanced up to confirm. He was.

And he was smiling.

His smile never left his face even though I had caught him staring.

"What?" I said, hoping for my nervousness to magically fade away.

"Nothing. You look like a hamster when you eat." That's what I said!

I shook my head and slightly let out a laugh. "Yeah, tell that to yourself in the mirror."

We have finished eating our meals, and he asked for dessert afterward. I couldn't eat anything after so I decided just to drink the wine.

While I was spinning the wine in my wine glass, Baekhyun cleared his throat, which made me glance. I set down the wine glass.

"What?" I asked.

"I just want to ask because this has been in my mind ever since I saw you alone today. Why are you alone?" He innocently asked.

I paused for a while.

"Uhm, my date left." His expression somewhat darkened at the word date.

"Oh, you go on dates now?" He teased, resulting in a smile from me.

"Is that such a bad thing?" I rolled my eyes.

"No. I'm just happy you're exploring,"

"What do you mean by exploring? I'm not exploring." I confidently said while playing with my wine glass again.

"You know, like, you go on dates with different guys, and then you know, you explore." I somehow got what he meant, and I immediately kicked his legs under the table.

"Ow! What was that for?" Baekhyun exaggeratedly squealed, causing other people from tables near us to look at us.

I told him to quiet down or else I'll leave him here embarrassed.

When he calmed down, his facial expression turned serious.

"No, but really, who stood you up? I can file a report,"

I sneered. "What are you going to report? That someone stood me up? Nonsense."

He sighed in defeat. "Fine, fine! But tell me who that jerk is, and I'll send cops on his way."

"Gosh, what's with the lawyer attitude," I rolled my eyes once again and heard him laugh.

"No, in all seriousness, who left you here?"

Should I say Sehun or boyfriend? But boyfriend is too boasting, and if I say Sehun's name, he'll just dig deeper in the conversation, and I want to go back to work already.

"Just someone. None of your business." I quickly said.

Baekhyun shrugged, letting it go. I let out a sigh of relief.

"What about you? Why are you here alone?" I shot back at him. He glanced at me while he was drinking his wine.

"I was here for a meeting, miss." He teased.

I smiled. I looked at my watch, and it's already one in the afternoon. I have a scheduled autopsy at one-thirty, so I need to go back.

"Going back to work?" He asked as if he observed my body language and analyzed it.

"Yeah, I'll pay for the meal." I grabbed my bag, coat and stood up.

He stopped me and grabbed my hand. I looked down at him and his hands. "No need, I've already paid for it earlier."

"Oh, uhm, thank you. I'll pay you back, just text me your account num—"

"It's fine, Suzy. This one's on me. Maybe for next time, you can pay." He lets go of my hand and stands up to face me.

Next time? There'll be next time?

"Thank you for accompanying me." I quietly said.

He smiled at me and left the restaurant. I looked back and watched his back disappear from my line of sight.

What is this feeling?

"Uhh, why are you in my office?" I said when I was greeted with four people instead of zero.

I just finished work and was about to rest for a bit before I drive home, but I guess that won't go as planned because they're here.

"Because it's opened?" Jennie sarcastically said, with Jongin wrapping his arms around her shoulders.

I looked at Kyungsoo and Sooyoung.

I let out a small chuckle. "What is this, a divine intervention?"

I sat on my chair and rested my elbow on the desk, waiting for them to answer my simple question.

"So?" I said impatiently.

Sooyoung looks at me. "I'm getting married!" Everyone squealed. I was shocked, and I quickly stood up and went to her. Instead of hugging her, I grabbed her hands and saw the large diamond resting on the top of her ring.

"Oh my gosh, that's huge! Chanyeol's got money." I teased, still gazing at the ring on her finger. She pulls her hand away from my grip and looks at me.

"Well, thank you for congratulating me! It's so heartwarming, really," She rolled her eyes. Kyungsoo laughs along with Jennie.

My facial expression turned soft, and I knew I was about to cry.

"Oh! I knew this was going to happen!" Kyungsoo points at me while laughing with Jennie and Jongin.

"Stop it!" I whined. Sooyoung faced me, and I hugged her. I knew my tears were going to fall, so I rested, buried my face on her shoulders, and sobbed.

"You're sobbing more than when Chanyeol proposed to me," Sooyoung laughed, caressing my back to comfort and calm me down.

I pull away and grab a tissue from the tissue box next to me. "That's so great. This is so great. I'm so happy for you,"

I hugged her again. Kyungsoo and Jennie joined the hug as well.

I looked at Jongin, who was hesitating to join. I motioned him to come, and he stands up in glee and wraps his arms around the four of us.

Today's a happy day.
